Band rock LIVE yang mempunyai single - single keren tentang sisi humanisme,kedamaian dan kebijaksanaan Hindu seperti dalam album Secret Semedhi "Lakini Juice", "Freaks" dan beberapa single dari album - album yang lainnya.
Saya tertarik dengan lagu "HEAVEN" terutama liriknya tentang pengungkapan sorga sesungguhnya. Simak aja reff nya :

Memang benar segala keceriaan hidup dan bagaimana perilaku surgawi tercermin pada anak - anak kita yang masih balita. Coba tatap matanya dan gaya tidurnya begitu damai. Kenakalannya terasa wajar mengajarkan kita bagaimana untuk menyikapi hidup dan melepaskan keterikatan "kita" terhadap perangkap jasmani tubuh ini.
Selayaknya keceriaan seorang anak kecil, hidup ini hanya sekali, sebentar seharusnya disikapi dengan bijaksana dimanfaatkan untuk kepentingan yang tidak merugikan kepentingan orang lain dan dapat memberi inspirasi dan manfaat bagi sesama.
Lagu "THE BEAUTY OF GREY" mengingatkan kita akan semboyan bangsa ini Bhineka Tunggal Ika. Meskipun berbeda suku, agama, ras tetapi kita punya kesamaan dalam membangun persatuan INDONESIA. Bagaimana perbedaan itu terasa indah karena kita punya 1 semangat persamaan dalam sejuta perbedaan. Dan bisa saling membantu dan hidup bersama.

Mendengar lagu "All Yours" dari soundtrack Twilight : Eclipse membuat penasaran dengan band ini. METRIC adalah band rock indie, yang terbentuk di Toronto, Kanada. Musik mereka sedikit ber-beat disco dan rock dengan suara khas sang vocalis Emily Haines.

The Wallflowers merupakan group beraliran rock asal Los Angeles,California dengan frontman Jakob Dylan ( putra dari sang legend Bob Dylan ). Terbentuk pada 1989 dengan anam The Apples dan telah mengalami gonta ganti personil dan hanya Dylan saja yang masih bertahan.
Mereka telah merilis lima album studio , satu album kompilasi dan memiliki berbagai single - single dan kerap mengisi soundtrack. Mereka telah memenangkan dua penghargaan Grammy untuk Best Rock Performance Duo or Group dan Best Song Rock untuk lagu mereka " One Headlight "pada tahun 1998 dari album mereka yang populer "Bringing Down The horse".

Terbentuk di tahun 1981 dengan nama Loud Fast Rule band beraliran punk. Dengan formasi awal Dave Pirner ( Voc,Gitar ) ,Daniel David Murphy ( Guitaris,Voc ) ,Karl Herman Mueller ( Bassist,backup voc ) , Patrick Morley ( Drums ).
Mereka mulai debut album perdana dengan nama SOUL ASYLUM direkam di jalur 'indie" dengan sebuah recording lokal. Dan semenjak album Hang Time 1988 dan And the Horse Rode In On mulai beralih ke A&M records.
Kemudian pas kemunculna album mereka yang terkenal Grave Dancers Union mereka bekerjasama dengan label Colombia Records. Dan mulailah kesuksesan mereka raih sampai sekarang. Prestasi mereka pun meningkat dari sekedar band rock kampus menjadi internasional rockers.

...i just want to scream HELLO!!!......( penggalan lirik dari eldelery woman behind in counter in the small town ). Pearl Jam memang tidak bisa lepas dari kehidupan saya. Bermula dari sebuah majalah Hai Klip Grunge,video klip Jeremy di TVRI dan pinjaman kaset TEN dari seorang teman JADILAH PEARL JAM jadi terpatri dalam otak saya. Waktu itu memang orang - orang pada cinta mati sama NIRVANA tapi saya pengen nyoba jagoan GRUNGE yang lain karena saya ingin BEDA dengan mereka maka jatuhlah pilihan pada PEARL JAM. Apalagi nuansa kelam BLACK pas banget dimasa pencarian itu.
Aah...itu hanya sedikit nostalgila di masa SMP beranjak SMA tapi setidaknya gairah menulis artikel musik timbul lagi setelah peperangan batin dan pemantapan jatidiri. Dan koleksi MP3 dan DVD Pearl Jam sejauh ini sudah agak lengkap.
Tak terasa PEARL JAM telah merilis BACKSPACER album dengan lagu -lagu yang rata - rata sangat cepat. Dibuka dengan Gonna See My Friend yang rock n roll dilanjutkan dengan nomor - nomor keren seperti Got Some, The Fixer, Johny Guitar, Just Breathe ( mengingatkan akan soundtrack Ed Vedder di Into The Wild ),Amongst The Waves, Unthought Known, Supersonic, Speed Of Sound , Force Of Nature ( wah nie lagu fave saya di album ini ) dan ditutup dengan The End ( mudah - mudahan Pearl Jam ga "the end" ya ). Setiap album Pearl Jam selalu membawa nuansa baru dan kreatifitas bermusik personilnya yang tak pernah padam. Hampir semua nomor - nomor diatas enak didengar dan pas dengan zaman sekarang. Yang masih kurang bagi saya sebagai fans Pearl Jam adalah KAPAN SAYA BISA NONTON PEARL JAM DI NEGERI SAYA????

ABOUT THE MOVIE
Film ini mengisahkan tentang Punisher dalam menumpas penjahat yang sangat sulit ditangani oleh polisi dan kebal hukum yaitu Bobby Rosseti ( JIGSAW ).
Jigsaw dibantu oleh saudaranya James merekrut pasukan dari beberapa geng untuk berperang melawan Punisher atau disebut Punisher Party dengan hadiah uang.
Tujuan utamanya adalah membunuh Punisher untuk membalas dendam karena wajahnya rusak akibat dilempar ke mesin penggilingan botol dan kaca. Mereka ( Jigsaw dkk )membunuh sahabat2 punisher dan menyandera istri dan anak seorang agen FBI Donatelli yang tewas oleh Punisher dalam penyamaranya.
The Punisher merasa bertanggungjawab terhadapa keselamatan istri dan anak Donnateli.
Aksi baku hantam dan tembak menembak pun terjadi. Hanya seorang diri Punisher mampu manjatuhkan puluhan anggota gang rekrutan JIGSAW. Film ini sendiri belum edar di Indonesia,mungkin karena tingkat kesadisanya gak ampun2. Berbeda dengan film The Punisher ( 2004 ),Punisher Warzone lebih sesuai dengan karakter komiknya yang penuh adegan brutal dan sadis.Kelebihan film ini adalah tingkat kebrutalan The Punisher dalam membasmi musuhnya2 benar2 sesuai dengan karakter di komiknya.

Born in New York to parents of Italian ancestory, Francis Castiglione is a former U.S. Marine Captain. Before Frank joined the Marines, he was studying to become a Catholic priest but changed his mind because he was unable to forgive those who did evil. Also prior to his enlistment, he married his wife Maria who was already pregnant with their first child. During his time in the United States Marine Corps (USMC), Castle graduated from Basic Training, then went on to Infantry School. Immediately following that, he went through the USMC's Reconnaissance, Force Reconnaissance, and Sniper Schools. Attaining dockets, Castle was permitted to go through U.S. Army Airborne School, and U.S. Navy Underwater Demolition Team training, becoming qualified as a Navy SeAL (Sea, Air and Land). He served in the Vietnam War in a special forces unit as a point man. For heroism in the line of duty, he was decorated with numerous medals, inlcuding the Purple Heart.
Shortly after a tour in Vietnam, Castle, his wife, Maria and their children were in New York's Central Park for an afternoon picnic when they witnessed a Mafia gangland execution; an informant had been hanged from a tree. Seeking to eliminate all witnesses, the Costa crime family murdered them on the spot. However, Castle survived. Even though Frank was able to identify all of the shooters the police were unable to help Castle in his quest for justice; they were tied in too deeply to the powerful Costa family. He decided that the only punishment criminals might receive is that of physical destruction. Shortly thereafter, he emblazoned his body armor with a symbol of a death's head, and exacted his revenge. Since then he has waged a one-man war upon crime, taking the name Punisher.

THE HISTORY
Blind Melon formed in California in 1989, with members from Indiana, Mississippi, and Pennsylvania. The band signed to Capitol Records in 1991 and recorded an unreleased demo. The band's initial popularity is partially attributed to vocalist Hoon's association with Guns N' Roses frontman Axl Rose, and Hoon's backing vocals on several Guns N' Roses tracks on 1991's Use Your Illusion album The band's self-titled debut album, produced by Rick Parashar (Pearl Jam), contained thirteen songs and sold poorly until the "No Rain" single was released in November 1993. The single, promoted by a music video featuring the "Bee Girl" (played by Heather DeLoach), helped launch the commercial success of the band, eventually leading the album to quadruple-platinum status. 1994, the band began recording their second album, Soup, in New Orleans with producer Andy Wallace. The album was released in 1995, and predominantly featured shorter songs with a less conventional alternative rock approach. The lyrics to "St. Andrew's Fall" referenced a suicide jump,while "New Life" discussed the forthcoming birth of Hoon's child."Mouthful of Cavities" featured backing vocals from Jena Kraus, who subsequently recorded a solo record with Christopher Thorn and Brad Smith.Possibly because of the more experimental sound (the album begins and ends with New Orleans style jazz and has a hodgepodge of instrumentation throughout), the album failed to meet salesexpectations.
In 1995, Blind Melon contributed a version of the song "Out on the Tiles"
to the Encomium tribute album to Led Zeppelin, as well as a promotional CD with a cover of the Schoolhouse Rock! song "Three Is a Magic Number".Against the advice of Hoon's drug counselor, Blind Melon went on tour in support of Soup. Hoon was found dead on the band's tour bus of a cocaine overdose on October 21, 1995 in New Orleans. The remaining members released Nico (named for Hoon's daughter, only thirteen weeks old when her father died) in 1996, with the profits going to a program that helps musicians with drug and alcohol addiction.Nico contained unreleased songs from the Soup recording sessions, as well as other songs often recorded with only partial instrumentation. The closingtrack, "Letters from a Porcupine", was recorded as a telephone message left by Hoon on Thorn's answering machine.Nico included covers of Steppenwolf and John Lennon songs.Blind Melon officially disbanded on March 4, 1999 and the various members went on to other projects.
Kenapa Nama Bandnya BLIND MELON?
With the final band member added, they were complete but needed to find a name for their new found band.They considered Brown Cow, Gristie, Frog, Mud Bird, Naked Pilgrims and Head Train. One day Brad asked, “What’s happening, blind melons?”
It was how his father used to greet some hippie neighbors back home.There were about ten of them renting the house next door to the Smith’s,none with any discernible source of income so the image fit.

Crish Cornell "Scream"

Scream is the third solo studio album by American musician Chris Cornell. Released on March 10, 2009, it marked a complete shift from Cornell's previous musical efforts with the massive exclusion of guitars and rock elements that were replaced with producer Timbaland's electronic pop soundscapes. The album was promoted with the release of five digital singles and three music videos, and was met with mixed reviews.
Musical style
Billboard reported that Scream shows Cornell moving "in a much more R&B-oriented direction, with busy drum machine beats, buffed-up chorus vocals and string samples filling the nooks and crannies", comparing it to Gnarls Barkley and less that of "the guitar-driven music of Cornell's past with Soundgarden and Audioslave". Despite the controversy caused by teaming up with Timbaland,Cornell insisted that he still played an integral part of the album's creation and didn't do what "[Timbaland] told me to do", further noting that they "didn't really have that relationship" and "it wasn't that type of a process. It was more, he would bring in a beat, an idea, I would write to it and sing it, and we would move on kind of to the next thing."
Describing the album as a whole, Cornell compared it to Pink Floyd's The Dark Side of the Moon and Queen's A Night at the Opera, citing the psychedelic elements that Timbaland brought into the production.

A decade after turning their backs on fame, Seattle's grunge survivors are ready for Act Two by BRIAN HIATT

Eddie vedder is trying to get me drunk. We're in his hotel suite after the Cleveland show. He pops open a Bud with his lighter and hands it to me -- before I'm done with it, he'll try to hand me another one. Vedder has already chugged a bottle of red wine onstage, as usual, so he drinks more slowly now, nursing a Coors.
"I've actually tried to play a few shows without drinking," he says of his wine habit later that night. "But you know how bartenders sneak a drink in here and there, but the busboys can't? I felt more like the busboy -- that I was just working." Vedder used to smoke pot with some frequency, but he hasn't touched it since his daughter's birth. He also had "an Ecstasy phase" at some point and even tried recording some techno. "I was listening to all this stuff on Ecstasy. But I was wondering, 'Are they writing it on Ecstasy?' I decided that the pure way to do it is to actually take Ecstasy, and then write Ecstasy music," he says, laughing. "That didn't work out. But I enjoyed the Ecstasy."
Backstage before the show in Cleveland, he asks me, "Are you ready to stay up late?" I was ready. Vedder decides to put on mood music and disappears into his bedroom. After a pause, the sounds of the Strokes' new album fill the room. "Now obviously I have a lot more random stuff than the Strokes, but this is what's handy," he apologizes.
For someone who spent years ducking the media, Vedder is a hell of an interview -- engaging and verbose. When he gets deep into an anecdote, his low, resonant voice is nearly hypnotic. As we begin, he drafts a soap dish into service as an ashtray and lights the first of many American Spirits.
I ask him about "Life Wasted," on which he sings, "I have faced it, a life wasted/ I'm never going back again." He closes his eyes as he talks about how attending a friend's funeral can help you "realize what a gift this is, to be alive. When you leave that funeral, that drive is as important as any single stretch of road you'll travel on. You've got a renewed appreciation for life. And I think that feeling can last through the day, through the week, but then things start getting back to normal and you start taking this living and breathing and eating thing for granted. I think that song is there to remind you, 'This is that feeling.' "
Vedder had a specific friend in mind when he wrote the song: "The truth is -- I'm a little sensitive and this is a close, personal relationship. I'll just say it. Fuck it. Right up front. Half the record is based on the loss of the guy who turned out to be the best friend I ever had on the planet. And that was Johnny Ramone." Suddenly, the fast tempos and chunky power-chords that dominate Pearl Jam make a lot more sense.
It was an odd friendship: The Ramones guitarist, who died on September 15th, 2004 -- a month or so before Pearl Jam began recording sessions for the new album -- was a hard-core Republican and, by most accounts, not the warmest guy in the world. "We used to laugh that I made him a nicer human being and that he made me more of an asshole," Vedder says. Vedder, along with Red Hot Chili Peppers guitarist John Frusciante, Vincent Gallo and Rob Zombie, spent hours at Ramone's house, where he would play them music (on a jukebox, not a guitar) and show film clips of acts from Gene Vincent to the Dead Boys. "We were the students of Johnny Ramone, and forever bonded," Vedder says. "Never have I experienced a loss of someone I talked to with such frequency, in such depth, with such intimacy."
But it was yet another of Vedder's famous friends who would help him resolve the central drama of his life. Vedder's mother was in the middle of a painful divorce from Mueller when she told Eddie, then seventeen, the truth about his parentage. Vedder and Mueller were already at odds -- at one point, he has alleged, his stepfather pushed him down a flight of stairs. (Mueller has denied it.) As a kid, Vedder tells me, he used to cope with his pain over that relationship by going to a park with his guitar and singing a song by one of his heroes, Bruce Springsteen -- "Independence Day," the tale of a father and son parting ways: "There was just no way this house could hold the two of us." On 2004's Vote for Change Tour, Vedder finally became close with Springsteen.
One night, Vedder and Springsteen -- who famously worked out his own father issues in his music -- stood on a Manhattan rooftop, drinking tequila. "We were talking politics, and then got into family politics, of which we'd experienced a great deal and had a lot in common. It was a pretty intense conversation," Vedder says, haltingly. "He exposed me to some truths that he'd processed in a healthy way, that for me were still in a diseaselike state. He helped me cure some things I had been living with for a long time."
That night, Vedder told Springsteen how he used to play "Independence Day" and how his music had affected him. "You helped me as a voice coming from a piece of vinyl," he told him. "Now you helped to put it away by being a human being in front of me."
Not long after the conversation with Springsteen, Vedder attended the wedding of one of his brothers. There, he came face to face with his stepfather for the first time since the Eighties. "When I finally had to meet that guy again, Bruce was the one who got me in the right space to handle it," he says. "I have three younger brothers -- if it affected them that I didn't have a relationship with this guy, that was enough reason to forgive and resolve things. I didn't want them to be torn between the two of us."
We move on to another tough subject: the 2000 breakup of Vedder's marriage to Beth Liebling, whom he had dated since he was a teenager. He won't explain the split, but he does say that he was devastated. The divorce happened around the same time as the biggest tragedy of Pearl Jam's career: Nine young fans were crushed to death on June 30th that year during a set at the Roskilde Festival in Denmark. "You can imagine what kind of fetal position I was in," he says. "I just remember thinking that there was no way out. I was listening to The Who by Numbers and there's a line in 'Slip Kid' -- 'There's no easy way to be free.' I was thinking, 'I couldn't agree with you more.' "
Then Vedder met Jill McCormick. She was a model, a profession that Vedder had savaged in the Vitalogy track "Satan's Bed": "Such fine examples, skinny little bitch/Model, role model, roll some models in blood/Get some flesh to stick, so they look like us." He laughs when I ask if he apologized for those lyrics. "Look, the person I fell in love with, that happened to be her job. There were a couple days where it was like, 'Wow, this seems contradictory.' It had to pass a harder test than falling in love with just anyone. And it did."
But before the new relationship, while Vedder was still despairing over Roskilde and his divorce, the band went on with a tour. Sonic Youth opened, and Thurston Moore and Kim Gordon's then-six-year-old child, Coco, came along. "Coco gave me drawings, we played pingpong. Coco reminded me to open up my world, kept me from being the bitter asshole I had every right to be. I thought after Roskilde, 'OK, this is my chance, I can be that asshole forever.' Coco led me to the light.
"And now I have one of my own." He shows me some adorable pictures of Olivia Vedder, born on June 11th, 2004. It's nearly five o'clock in the morning.Vedder shakes his head and looks me in the eyes. "Roger Daltrey has this thing he always says: 'Be lucky.' It took me a few years to reach it -- but I took his advice."

Vater's Artist Relations Director, Chad Brandolini, recently caught up with Artist Dave Krusen about the re-issue of Pearl Jam's breakthrough debut, "Ten", eighteen years after it's original release. Dave spoke about the tracking, drum set up and the writing of what became an iconic album, selling more than 12 million copies.
Give a brief history of how you got involved and joined Pearl Jam?
I had friends that had a band called Son Of Man who used to play shows with Mother Love Bone, Soundgarden etc. They heard Jeff (Ament) and Stone (Gossard) were looking for a drummer for something new after Mother Love Bone disbanded. I called Jeff, who was in the phonebook and he invited me down to jam. We had a very cool sound from the get go. That was the beginning of Pearl Jam.
What was the songwriting process for this set of songs and how old where the songs when "Ten" was recorded?
Stone had a few songs, not sure how long he'd had them. Not long though. We started working those up, while Eddy was still in San Diego. I didn't even know they had a singer, but he was hard at work on lyrics down there. (I didn't ask a lot of questions). Then we started working on some ideas that Jeff had, things like that. Some stuff just came from spontaneous jams. The song "Release" was one like that, that came from a jam. It all came together quickly and easily from what I remember.

What was your drum kit set up like? Did it stay consistent from track to track?
Yeah it stayed about the same the whole time. The tracks, "Alive", "Wash", "Brother", "I've got a feeling" were all from the demos. That kit used on those songs was my kit at the time; a Tama Swingstar , 22x16, 11x12, 13x14, an old 5x14 Ludwig Supraphonic snare. Pinstripe heads on all the drums but an Ambassador on the snare drum. Sabian 18" crash, 20" Zildjian Scimitar Ride, 20" AA Sabian China and Paiste 14" 404 Hi-Hats that were cracked. For the record, I borrowed a Ludwig maple kit. 22x18, 11x12, 13x14 and a Noble & Cooley 5x14 maple snare. Cymbals were Sabian 20" AA Heavy Ride, 18" AA Thin Crash, 18" HH Thin Crash, 20" AA China, 13" AA Regular Hats and a 15" metal crasher. White coated Ambassador on kick. CS black dot the snare. We had coated ambassadors on toms, but switched to pinstripes.
How many tracks in total were recorded for the "Ten" session?
Whoa, not sure. A LOT!!! I do remember the 2" tapes we had finished, lined up against the wall. It stretched on for quite a ways. Maybe 20, 25 songs all together. Maybe more.
Did the band track one song, complete it and then move to the next, or did you go through and record all the drum tracks in a row before the other guys put down their parts?
We did most of the record live as a band. They did do some vocals, some solos, bits and pieces as overdubs. But, the bulk of every song was done before we moved on to the next.

Did you record to a click?
We started with a click for the record. There might be a couple that it worked on, "Jeremy" maybe. But for the most part, we'd been playing most of the tunes live, for long enough, that they had to breathe in order to work. I was pretty green back then and "Even Flow" suffered from too much fluctuation. But, "Alive", "Once", and most of the songs were just us tearing through them.
How many takes did you do for each song on average?
I think most of the songs were only a handful of takes. But "Even Flow"...like I said, it was really tough for me. I don't know why. Not sure why we didn't use that one from the demo as well, but I know it felt better.
How many days did it take for the drum tracking? How many days for the entire album to be complete?
Two weeks to do the drums. The whole album took about a month and a half I think.

Oceans" has some cool percussive elements. What was used on that track?
We originally tracked drum kit on that song. Then I added three tympani parts. I remember we were all in the control room listening to the tympani part with the drums muted. Someone commented how cool it sounded like that, so we kept it that way. I'm glad we did.
Are there any songs recorded in the session that have never been released or surfaced on another Pearl Jam record?
Lost Dogs (released in 2002) has some great stuff from that session that hadn't seen the light of day. "Brother", the song being released as a new single as part of the re-issue of Ten, is on there without vocals. There's the Mudhoney tune we did, ("Touch me I'm sick"), a Free song, a Beatles tune. It's cool now to hear how we interacted musically. It was pretty damn cool!
At that time, what were the expectations going into this album?
Not sure what the expectations were. The band was trying to create a sound that was timeless was the feeling I had.
Did you ever imagine that the songs would still be relative all these years later?
We just wanted to make a great record. I remember how impressed I was with the songs, the sound coming back on the speakers in the control room. But I'm not sure any of us knew how they would be looked at down the road.
When writing and tracking "Jeremy", did you or the band ever think that the song and/or video would cause so much controversy?
I didn't know what the song was really about until after I saw the video. From what I remember about Eddy, he wrote that about what he was feeling. I don't think he wanted to create controversy, but he did want to talk about something that struck a chord within him. I think he's a great writer because he doesn't fear others judgment about such things.
How do you feel when someone says how much of an influence "Ten" made on the music industry or in their personal life?
I still get people coming up to me telling me how they love that record, and it's a great feeling! Mostly because I know how the records I loved growing up have helped me through tough times and how they made me feel connected to something. I love being a part of that, it's what I always wanted to do.
Looking back and listening to the tracks, are there any songs, if given the opportunity to go back, that you would play any differently?
"Even Flow" for damn sure! Other than that, "Breath and A Scream". I'm happy with most of it though.
If you had one song to pick from on "Ten" that you feel best represents you as a musician, what song would that be?
"Alive".
What was the concept behind the album cover and artwork?
I feel like it was unity. Jeff built this massive Pearl Jam wood cut-out. That thing we're standing in front of was actual size! Jeff's an amazing artist through and through.
What have you been up to lately musically?
Lately I've been keeping busy with several different projects. I've been recording and playing live with The Kings Royal, Puppies And Kittens, Toy Robot, Shelby, Ida Maria, La La La Birdtime as well as a couple things still under wraps. Also, my nine year old son Jagger, (who also uses only Vater sticks), has been shredding some serious stuff on the drums. Keep an eye out for him!

Q: Seattle has always been out of the mainstream American rock circuit, so how did the scene develop in the 1980s?Stone Gossard: Everyone just got in bands. There wasnt a lot of trying to do anything other than that nobody was getting signed. A lot of us couldnt play! Whatever we had we tried to bring to the table and that made some weird combinations of people playing together so everybody was going for broke in the sense of what have you got to lose?
Matt Cameron: Seattle was isolated so a lot of national known big time rock acts wouldnt necessarily come up to Seattle and Portland. That forced the North West music scene to look inward and create stuff on our own turf, play our own clubs. At the time the 80s underground in the US was definitely getting a lot more organised with bands like Black Flag and Husker Du, Minor Threat, Butthole Surfers they were able to create a circuit that had nothing to do with major labels and the known music industry at that time. What our music scene really plugged into was that do it yourself spirit.
Q: Jeff and Stone you started playing together in Green River back in 1984. What were your early influences?
Stone: my influences were a lot of FM rock and pop on the radio. Simon and Garfunkel and disco. You couldnt help but be affected by disco. Even if you werent at the time in love with disco it was everywhere. I missed British punk I never really understood it until I started listening to the Sex Pistols in 84 and I went whoa, this is a rock band. Heavy Metal was huge too. Motorhead was the ultimate Seattle band, the lynchpin memories of how much you loved Black Sabbath when you were 8 years old.
Q: It is sometimes claimed that Green River invented grunge.
Jeff Ament: (chuckles) In the last year weve played four shows with Green River and while its been great to go back weve come to the conclusion that we were really just ripping off Black Flag and Motorhead and The Stooges. I guess thats what ended up being grunge so we probably owe Iggy and Lemmy and Greg Ginn some royalties from that era. They havent asked yet!
Q: In early 1990 the future of the Seattle rock scene appeared to be Mother Love Bone, in which Stone and Jeff wrote many of the songs. The band was fronted by the charismatic Andrew Wood and was signed to a major label. Days before the release of the bands debut album, Apple, Wood took a heroin overdose. He died a few days later from a cerebral haemorrhage. When Andrew died did you feel your chance was gone?
Jeff: I felt like maybe that was my one shot. I hung out with Stone a little right after Andy died. Wed go on long bike rides, sit around, have coffee and talk about anything other than being in a band together. I tried to make some sort of sense about what I was gonna do and if Stone and I were ever going to do anything together again. A friend of mine, Richard Stuverud, was in a band called War Babies. Their bass player had just quit and he said we have a show in 3 days can you learn these songs and play the show with us? I did and I had such a great time, better than the last days in Mother Love Bone. Right around the same time Stone said that he and Mike [McCready] had been playing some new songs that hed written and did I want to play on the demos that they were gonna cut.
Stone: I loved writing songs I had the bug so I was just gonna keep writing. We had some really tough circumstances but at the same time I loved waking up, writing songs and playing in a band particularly if its stuff you can play.
Q: How did you meet Mike?
Jeff: I ran into the singer of Shadow in the parking lot behind the restaurant that I worked in and he invited me to their show. When I got off work I walked in and Mike was on the stage by himself playing a guitar solo a la Eddie Van Halen Mike McCready [laughs]: He shuddered. Even through Jeff was in the punk rock scene and I was in the metal scene it was a small scene up here in Seattle back in the early 80s so it was hard not to run into somebody. By the end of the 80s Id been through the ringer of the music business. Id been playing in bands since I was 11 and we moved down to Los Angeles in 86 trying to make it down there with Shadow. We played for about a year, partied, ran out of money and I became totally disillusioned with rock and roll. I got Crohns disease, which just brought me to my knees so I changed everything. I just knew it was never gonna happen. I went to the illogical extreme. So I went back to school in Seattle, cut off all my hair and I was reading these Barry Goldwater books. That lasted for about a year then I heard Muddy Waters playing on the Bands last Waltz and started playing music again. Like phew. I heard that Stone was looking for me he saw me playing at a party jamming to a Stevie Ray Vaughan record when Mother Love Bone was still happening so for me it was a huge opportunity. In my mind Stone had made it cos he had a record contract, hed already put out records, he knows the game and that was the unattainable thing for me. Stone and Jeff were rock stars around Seattle I had to ask Stone after we started jamming for about a week are we gonna start a band? What do you want to do? Cos he was keeping everything very close to his chest. It was an exciting timebrand new. it was a twist of fate for me.
Q. The trio of Stone, Jeff and Mike quickly put together some song ideas but were still looking for a singer and a drummer. Matt Cameron, drummer with Soundgarden and a stalwart of the Seattle scene, was recruited to play on the demo tapes. Eight years later he joined Pearl Jam as their full time drummer. Matt: I couldnt predict what it would become obviously but they were all very well structured songs that you could definitely hear vocals on top. It was just a fun thing to do as I was between tours. It didnt sound like Mother Love Bone to me. It seemed like Stone was going for something different.
Stone: I expected that we were going to find somebody [to sing] in Seattle only because so far thats the way it had all worked. We loved Uplift Mofo Party Plan the Chilli Peppers record and the drumming on that record. Then because wed had some success in terms of getting signed and we were like OK maybe we should be bold enough to call up [drummer] Jack Irons and see what hes doing because we heard at that time he wasnt playing with the Chilli Peppers anymore. He was playing with Eleven and I literally just asked him on they way out the door if you know of any singers let us know so he said Yeah I do. I know a guy. Crazy Eddie.
Q: The demo tape was passed along to Eddie Vedder who had an epiphany on his surfboard. He quickly recorded three vocals over the backing tracks and posted it back to Seattle. What was your reaction to Eddies songs?
Stone: For Jeff it was instantaneous he loved it and a lot of people realised how good he was. For me it was a longer process. I was probably slow. He was clearly a good singer. I didnt necessarily get it. You can hear a song in your head but when somebody actually brings you back a finished vocal you can be like wow thats a different approach.
Q: When Eddie flew up to Seattle he insisted on going straight from the plane into the rehearsal studio. Stone: Eddie wasnt a drunk. He was mellow. He brought us gifts. He was very thoughtful and very different and that was a great change so we dove right into it and wrote a bunch of songs. Then we knew it was on. You write your songs and then youve got em, then you go out and play, try to put yourself into em and hope for the best.
Mike: the first time Ed came to the studio he was wearing a Butthole Surfers T shirt. He had long hair but it was shaved at the side, cut off shorts and Doc Marten boots that were fairly worn in and a tan because he was living in California. I had already heard him sing on his demo and I knew he had a fantastic, exciting voice so I was wondering what this guy looked like. He was my size. He was short, unassuming but when he opened his mouth he had this thunderous voice and I was stoked. Because he was still feeling the situation out he was very stoic and staid, didnt move very much as he does now. He would sing with this incredible voice and just stand there. I was blown away. I knew this was one of those moments that only comes once in a bands career. He was the missing piece to our band. There were 5 guys in a band, everybody was firing on all cylinders and Ed was a guy that could lead us to the promised land. I had no idea it was gonna be as huge as it did but I knew we were good.
Jeff: When we played with Ed we knew there was something happenin. I felt connected to what he was saying, how he was singing and the voice he brought to the band. I felt more connected to that than any other band Id ever been in. somewhere deep inside I knew that he gave us something for people to respond to it.
Q. The band were originally working as Mookie Blaylock the name of a pro basketball player. After they signed to Epic Records it became clear they would have to find another name for legal reasons. How did you settle on Pearl Jam?
Mike: Jeff, Ed and Stone saw Neil Young jamming for a long time so the word jam was there. I remember this list of names and we were sitting around the B&O coffee shop on Broadway. Pearl was up here and Jam was there amongst all these other words and we were putting them together. Jeff put those two together and we were like thats it.
Q: How did the recording sessions for Ten go?
Mike: wed done a few demos prior in our studio, the Galleria Potato Head. When we recorded Ten we brought in those ideas that Stone and I had been working on, that Jeff, Stone and I had been working on and what Ed had sung on over the period of a week Alive, Once, Jeremy and a couple of others that didnt make the record. We were up in London Bridge Studios in North Seattle and we would go in and record takes daily, and then overdub them later or the next day. We did Evenflow about 50 70 times. I swear to God it was a nightmare. We played that thing over and over until we hated each other. I still dont think Stone is satisfied with how it came out. That was maybe the most arduous thing but it was also very exciting to be in a big major recording studio for the first time.
Q: What are your favourite songs on Ten
Stone: I love Oceans. That probably sums up why I get excited about song writing. Its like open detuning where the first chords just straight across and its just 2 fingers that come on and off to create the whole thing and then it moves down one position and it moves back up. It has a tiny little change in it but its also got 3 big movements. What I love about music is aesthetic chords; the simpler the better and then another set that does something to those original chords. Its a really simple arrangement. We wrote it, we played it and Ed sang it, which is another thing that he does. Id never seen anyone engage with song writing the same way. Heres the song, let me play it for you. It goes like this. Ok theres a change here, lets do it and he would sing it. Id hear the melodies and Id think OK hes gonna write words or whatever and then I realised later that he actually had written the words right there. I couldnt understand how somebody could do that. Since then Ive met a lot of people that can do it so it was an eye opener but he does it better than anyone Ive ever seen do it.
Matt: When I was in Soundgarden and we were making Badmotorfinger Eddie brought up the mixes to Ten and I distinctly remember hearing the chorus for Evenflow and thinking thats HUGE. So hooky, its got a really rad Zeppelin huge rock feel to it. Although weve played it a couple of thousand times since Ive been in the group I think thats the quintessential Pearl Jam song. Even though it gets played out, the nuts and bolts of that song are just amazing. Oceans is also a fantastic song. Super fun to play.
Mike: I really like Alive a lot I look at it as a live song that weve done over the years and that people respond to very well and have an emotional attachment to. And I get to do a fun solo on it! Jeff: At the time it was Oceans and its still my favourite track. When we recorded it I thought we were pushing the envelope and that there was a lot of other places that we could take the music that we made. I also like the intro and outro music, which was a kind of art, project that we did on a day where somebody was sick. Thats what I get most excited about, the stuff thats just a little bit outside of our comfort zone. Every record we made has had a little art project index. Somebody would come in with a vision for something crazy or a different way to approach recording or writing or switching instruments. Sometimes theyve failed but every once in a while something really good happens which creates a new way to make music together. If we felt like we were pushing out and people responded to that that is success to me.
Q: Ten sold 12 million copies and has become a seminal 90s album. What do you think of it now? Stone: I think Tens still good but I dont put it on (laughs). The new mix of the record is great. Thats one of the things Im most excited about is Brendan doing another mix on it it sounds a little bit more like our subsequent records sounded so it gives it a different treatment
Matt: Its definitely stood the test of time. To me it sounds like a band playing in the studio.Jeff: A little bit of hindsight but not necessarily the 17 years that its taken to get to this point! Ever since we made our 2nd record weve been thinking about remixing Ten. The original version has a little bit more of an 80s production. When Brendan mixed Vs., I asked him can you remix Ten just for me so I can listen to a drier more direct version of those songs?
Q: The Super deluxe Ten reissue package contains all sorts of extra goodies, including Eddies original demo tape, a DVD of your MTV Unplugged session, a new remix of Ten by Brendan OBrien, notebooks and vinyl versions. How did it come about?
Jeff: Sonys been asking us to do it for a long time but Kelly our manager has had the idea to do a 20 year anniversary retrospective movie so hes been on board with [film director] Cameron Crowe for the last few years. He presented the idea to us of reissuing some of these records leading up to that and I was really excited about doing Ten. I wasnt happy with the way the original package came out. We had pretty severe restrictions in terms of what we could do. They didnt let us put it out on vinyl and that was a rough blow to us at the time cos I dont think I even had a CD player. I was one of the last people that I knew that got a CD player.Early on I found out it was better to make bad art yourself than to have somebody else create what they thought would represent you. Ed and I have always been super hands on with all our art and Ten was the one time in Pearl Jam where the finished product really wasnt 100% what we intended. There was a bit of headbutting going on with the Sony art department at that time. The version that everybody got to know as the Ten album cover was pink and it was originally intended to be more of a burgundy colour and the picture of the band was supposed to be black and white. I felt this reissue was an opportunity to go back and finish what we started.We had a hard time actually finding original photographs so all we had to work with was black and white photographs so we have a slightly different version of what the original colour was. We gave it a sepia tone finish. Ed and I dug through boxes and boxes of memorabilia and journals that we kept during the tours and the making of that first record and we created a journal with a lot of those artefacts and it was super fun. I think it was the first time that either one of us had dug through that stuff for 17 years and it filled in some memory loss that we had from that time. I think it has turned into a really cool package, a real fans package.
Mike: When we did MTV Unplugged we had flown in that day from Germany so we were all tired, jet lagged and hungover. We rented some guitars that were OK and we didnt feel that comfortable about it but we knew it was something that was good for us to do. Nobody in the band has ever been that excited about that performance but MTV Unplugged has been very exciting to many fans over the years like dude when are you going to release that? So we are finally gonna release that because of the fan demand.
Q: In the early days Ten was a slow seller and the band toured for months promoting it. During his first shows Eddie Vedder was a restrained front man. By the end he was an inspired performer. What caused that change?Mike: What made Ed change from being stoic and being introspective was when Chris Cornell from Soundgarden took him out drinking and gave him an idea of maybe loosening up. I dont know what he did but after he hung out with Chris he started to open up a little bit more. Then we went on tour, we went to Europe a few times and he became this guy who would climb everywhere during the middle of the songs. I was worried every time he did it. We were in San Diego it was us, Nirvana and the Chilli Peppers. He jumped up on this scaffolding bar, threw his microphone cord over it, climbed up it maybe 40 feet up, while we were doing the solo for Alive. Im thinking this guys gonna fall and kill himself and our careers over.
Stone: Ed didnt perform the way he was to subsequently till hed played 40 or 50 shows. Maybe not that many. All of a sudden he figured out how to exchange energy with the crowd in a way that hed never done before so thats when it went pheeeeeew. Ed knows how to inhabit a song and people can see it in his eyes and they hear it in his voice and they just fall into that.I knew everything had gelled on the road where we had transcendent shows. The next record was probably where it felt better recording wise. I saw how it could change and evolve which gave me a lot of inspiration to go we can do ballads, we can do fast stuff, we can do slow stuff, we can do punk stuff. That was where I realised there were gonna be a lot of places to go with Ed. To have Ed sing on anything, the way he writes lyrics and the way he approaches your material is fantastic. He really loves getting into it, the challenges of all of our songs and the different ways theyre brought into em. He hears things and once hes onto it hell give you such incredible variety in terms of vocal approaches and rhythm and story. Hes so great with different points of view that its like going to Disneyland.
Q: The band became hugely successful very quickly and then as a band instead of grasping for every buck you took a counter stance stopped shooting videos and got into a battle with Ticketmaster. Was that entirely popular inside the group?Mike: The idea of pulling back at the height of our popularity was not exciting to me at the time. I wanted to continue to ride it and play the game, to do videos and go on tour, not throw away this great opportunity. In hindsight it was the right idea. It happened so fast for all of us out of the blue. It was kind of mind shattering. It was affecting us all in certain different ways and we werent talking to each other, we were partying too much, Ed was on the cover of Time magazine everything blew up and had we not done that at the time certainly the record label wanted us to not do that. The record company wanted us to do a video for Black, they wanted us to play all the game shows, get on everything they could possibly get on and they fought us for a long time about that and were very pissed about it.Jeff, Stone and Ed specifically wanted to pull back and that saved us.Jeff: At the time we thought that selling millions of records was the biggest curse ever. We saw the REM kind of slow success as being the right way to do it cos they came from that same kind of DIY background. But in retrospect that power actually allowed us a lot of freedom and allowed us to do things in a way that probably 99% of the major label bands that were out there didnt get to do. We created our own method and our own handbook on how to do it and were still figuring it out because of the way technologys changing now.Jeff: The process of making a video was a painstaking process for us. It wasnt something that we were comfortable with, making sure the editing process was going the right way and that it was going to be as edgy as we wanted it to be, those were battles that took weeks and sometimes months. Sometimes wed spend $200,000 on this piece of art that nobody has ever seen so it just seemed like a waste of our time when we would rather be playing shows or writing songs.After we won the video of the year for Jeremy we were like well weve done this. We made the best video on the planet this year so now lets do something else.
Q: Over the years Pearl Jam have been incredibly supportive of their fans. Was that always in your grand plan or did that evolve?Stone: It was always in the plan in the sense that we saw right away that doin stuff on your own is good. None of us waited for anything to happen We just started playing, touring and making T shirts, recording and making coloured singles. We started doing that on our own.
Mike: Our fan base is very important to us. They are everything. They are the reason I am sitting here on this couch in our warehouse. We run a business out of here - its very important. It keeps us alive as a band. Our fans are extremely important to us and they follow us around. People go and see hundreds of shows. It just blows me away.
Jeff: After we sold a bazillion records on Ten we had a bit of power so we decided to exert that power. What would a music fan want? We approached things from that standpoint. The way that Pink Floyd put out packages using Hipgnosis artwork, Led Zeppelin used real special packaging. It was mystical and super creative and a lot of times it was totally off the wall I like to think that we used that little bit of power to make stuff that looked cooler.
Q: Pearl Jam were one of the first bands to release official bootlegs - and now internet downloads - of your concerts. Did you experience any record company objection when you started doing it?
Stone: Im sure there was somebody that said it was a bad idea but we just pushed it through and I think in the end they said oh we sold thousandsso thats cool. I didnt get the memo (laughs) as to how much we had to make the record company let us do bootlegs.
Mike: The driving force behind the bootleg series was Kelly Curtis our manager who had been talking about it with Jeff Ament and Eddie. Weve always liked bootlegs as a band but we would see our own bootlegs out there, wed collect them and they would be inferior quality. So we decided lets just put our own out and charge a little bit less for them and make em sound as good as they possibly can
Q: Where are you favourite places to tour?
Mike: I love England a lot. I love to walk around Hyde Park and hang out. I like to play in Rome, Milan; weve toured all over Italy thats been interesting. Columbia River Gorge is a favourite place we play here in Seattle. We played some shows with Neil Young and we subsequently did a record called Mirrorball with him and he asked us if we would be his touring band over in Europe. It was a dream come true. We got to play a bunch of Neil Young songs with Neil Young himself and got to go to Berlin, to Jerusalem, to the Red Sea.
Jeff: Europe is certainly on our radar right now and were still trying to figure out how to sanely tour there at some point in the next 18 months. A lot of its gonna depend on how quickly we finish up our new record. Weve only been to South America once but that was pretty phenomenal. The countries in Europe that have a real similar vibe to South America are Spain and Italy. We had a great tour of Canada in 2005 incredible. Its cool to know there are still places that we havent played. We havent played Alaska, we havent played Iceland, and we really need to get back to Finland because we played a show there in 93 with Neil Young that was not the best.
Q: Pearl Jam will be celebrating your 20th Anniversary in 2010. Do you see yourself going on indefinitely?Stone: It would be thrilling if it happened if we all looked at each other 10-20 years from now and went how did we do this. Wed have to play a crotchety Evenflow with disco brushes. (Laughs) Our fans are gonna be so old theyre not going to be able to hear us anyway so maybe we can be video transformed to look 30 years youngerMatt: I just dont want to become the Rolling Stones Mike: I dont think theres any way we thought our band would last 20 years. Were still talking. Its incredible.
Jeff: Its pretty insane that weve lasted 20 years. At the start I guessed we might make 3 or 4 records, have a little bit of success and we would have gotten to play with some of our heroes. Probably the biggest fringe benefit is that weve shared stages with Iggy Pop, Henry Rollins, REM, Neil Young, the Rolling Stones and Frank Black the list goes on and on. Thats the little kid dream come true being able to play with all those incredible bands and artists that we grew up loving and we still love.
Q: What is the secret of your longevity?Mike: Pearl Jam has survived this long by luck and because over the years the five of us have confronted each other on issues. We have open lines of communication and wed call somebody on their shit if theres a problem. The reason why weve lasted so long is we write music, we get very intense, we go away from each other, do our own thing and then we get back together. We give each other space.
Jeff: Thats the biggest reason why were still around. There was a point about 93 or 94 where we sort of disbanded for 6 months, didnt really talk to one another, didnt really know where each other was at and went off to live life and refuel. It gave us a lot of energy creatively to get away from the bubble. Right around that time everybody started doing side projects, started working on their own music and thats been really important and satisfying individually.
Q: Has Pearl Jam always been a democracy?
Jeff: I dont know if its ever been a dictatorship. we started the band with the idea that it was gonna be a democracy but theres been times in the last 15 years where Ed has had to take the reins because we were about to go off a cliff. At those times where we werent sure WHAT we were doing, hes been great at being able to steer the ship right. He has no problem telling any of us that he needs help. Now were pretty good at calling one another and saying things like how do you feel about this? Id really love to take the reins on this project and work it through. It makes everyone feel a genuine part of the band. Pearl Jam is a real band.Stone: Im the luckiest guy in the world cos I get to be in a band and write songs in a band with 5 songwriters. I get to learn from everybodys process of how a song structures change and how different people hear different rhythms and different melodies and different sequences. Ed can relate to all these sorts of different things, he always steps outside and keeps exploring new places. I get to play with Matt Cameron, I get to play with Eddie Vedder, come on! And I get to strum along.
Q: Whats your favourite Pearl Jam song?Stone: Nothing Man. I didnt write it. Jeff Ament wrote it, Dave Abbruzzese plays great drums on it. Jeff had the chord changes; him and Ed maybe worked it out before. Real Jeff Ament style, his approach to strumming. It has his character trademarks but at the same time really super simple, Ed connects so well with it that anyone who hears it will wanna sing along.
Matt: I really like playing Glorified G a lot from the 2nd record. Thats a really great quintessential Pearl Jam song 'cos its got the counterpoint guitars panned right and left hard and a really funky bass line.Stone: Its trying to be country and funky at the same time (laughs), which is really bizarre.
Mike: Alive or Evenflow but mostly Alive cos its our classic. a song that people identify with us. Its anthemic. I know the other guys probably wouldnt say that but thats what I think of it and thats what Ive heard people tell me. Alive encapsulates the lyricism, the musicianship and the feeling of this band.Jeff: Im really fond of a handful of songs that we recorded for the Vitalogy record. Last Exit, Nothing Man and Tremor Christ were recorded at Daniel Lanois studio in New Orleans. Theres something about the sound of those songs and how easily they came. I love playing Last Exit live and whenever I hear it, it just sounds like we did it right, it sounds natural like we captured what was coming out of us.

Chris Cornell Talks Ten and First Pearl Jam Gig

On Friday we had a long chat with Chris Cornell for an upcoming Q+A in Rolling Stone. On March 10th, he'll release Scream, his new album that he made with the mighty Timbaland.
In honor of the upcoming reissue of Pearl Jam's Ten, we got Cornell reminiscing about Temple of the Dog, and seeing PJ's first show ever, in October of 1990 at Seattle's Off Ramp.(They were known as Mookie Blaylock.)
Q: You were obviously around the guys in Pearl Jam when they were working on Ten. From your perspective, what was it like watching them ascend so quickly?
A: It was just one surprise after another. I was at their first show, and it wasn't a surprise to me that they'd take off. It wasn't an immediate ascension, though, it was very MTV-driven, which was the case with all the Seattle bands. To be frank, it was all MTV-driven. With Soundgarden, we'd sold a couple hundred thousand copies of Louder Than Love and MTV put up "Outshined" and suddenly we were Number Five on the Billboard charts. Same thing happened to Nirvana and Alice In Chains and the Chili Peppers. The hit video phenomenon is what propelled these bands to sell out stadiums.

What do you remember of that first Pearl Jam show?
It was fantastic. It was the best debut show of any band that I've ever seen. They were not the band that we toured with in '92 on Lollapalooza, whic was much more jam-oriented and much more aggressive. That first night they were flawless, and the soulfulness coming from Eddie was unlike anything I'd ever seen in a club. His singing was phenomenal, and the songs had a lot of weight to them, more so than when I'd heard those official recordings. I felt like I was seeing a moment that was happening that was about to change everything.

Was that after Eddie had sung on "Hunger Strike," with Temple of the Dog?
Yeah. When we did that, Eddie had only sung over the demos that Stone Gossard had sent him. They were working out whether or not they'd become a band. I wasn't really sure. So Eddie was at the second of two rehearsals that we had as Temple of the Dog, waiting for us to be done so that they could rehearse, and I was singin "Hunger Strike." I'd written it but it wasn't really complete. I thought it could be a live track, or a deep album track. All it had was a verse and a repeating chorus. It was written as it is, so I was singing the low and high parts simultaneously, thinking I would overlap them, and he shyly came up to the microphone and started singing the low parts. I heard his voice and a light bulb went off in my head, and I thought, “Wait a minute, he sounds amazing in this register, why not I’ll sing a verse, then he can sing the same verse again, so it’s up to two verses, and we’ll have a real song here. This could be great.” Everybody seemed to like that idea.

Which songs on Ten blew you away?
"Black" and "Release." Those were kind of shocking. The structures of those songs were not really typical, and they were really full of melody and super-memorable. I remember Eddie singing "Release" at the show and it knocked me over. It was weird, because Seattle went from this era where you couldn't find a good singer if you went to every single show seven days a week, to seeing Layne Staley do one-take demos for five songs in a row that were all incredible album takes, and seeing Eddie's debut. I was shocked by the first Nirvana demo I'd heard, which was before Bleach! Mark Lanegan was another guy. All these unique voices were starting to appear and no one sounded remotely similar to the other guy.

SEJARAH BLUR ( in english )

Blur are an English alternative rock band that formed in London in 1989. The four members of the band are singer Damon Albarn, guitarist Graham Coxon, bassist Alex James and drummer Dave Rowntree. Blur's debut album Leisure (1991) incorporated the sounds of Madchester and shoegazing. Following a stylistic change—influenced by English guitar pop groups such as The Kinks, The Beatles and XTC—Blur released the Modern Life Is Rubbish (1993), Parklife (1994) and The Great Escape (1995) albums. As a result, the band helped to popularise the Britpop genre and achieved mass popularity in the UK, aided by a famous chart battle with rival band Oasis dubbed "The Battle of Britpop".In recording their follow-up, Blur (1997), the band underwent another reinvention, influenced by the lo-fi style of American indie rock bands such as Pavement. "Song 2", one of the album's singles, brought Blur brief mainstream success in the US. The last album featuring Blur's original lineup, 13 (1999) found the band members experimenting with electronic music and gospel music, as Albarn wrote more personal lyrics. In May 2002, Coxon left Blur during the recording of their seventh album Think Tank (2003). Containing electronic sounds and more minimal guitar work, the album was marked by Albarn's growing interest in hip hop and African music. Since a 2003 tour without Coxon, Blur have done no studio work or touring as a band, as members have engaged in other projects. Blur confirmed in late 2008 that the band will reunite in 2009 with Coxon back in the fold.

311 dibentuk tahun 1990 di Omaha, Nebraska,Amerika Serikat. Terdiri dari :Nick Hexum ( vocals/gitar ), SA MArtinez ( vocal/DJ ),Tim Mahoney ( Lead Gitar ),Chad Sexton ( Drummmer ),P-Nut ( Bassist ). Vedder still drives the same 1990 Toyota truck around Seattle that he bought when he was working at a service station in San Diego. When he's asked if he keeps the same clothes and truck to remind him of his roots--as a way to keep in touch with himself amid the glitter of the rock world--he stares at his cup of tea."I don't need to do things like that to remind me of who I am," he says firmly. "But maybe it's good that other people see those things and maybe it sends a message, that I still am the same person."Vedder was born Edward Louis Seversen III in Evanston, Ill., a suburb of Chicago. His parents were divorced before his second birthday and the youngster grew up thinking his stepfather was his real father.

Until he adopted his mother's maiden name, Vedder, after dropping out of high school, he was known as Eddie Mueller, using his stepfather's last name.It wasn't a happy childhood, he says, but he found a comfort and excitement in music. Though The Who would eventually be his greatest inspiration, the first record that caught Vedder's ear was the Jackson 5's "ABC."Vedder didn't hear The Who until the family--which included three younger brothers--moved to San Diego County in the mid-70s. A baby-sitter brought the "Who's Next" album over one night and he listened to it on his stepfather's earphones.As things grew tense in his family, he listened more and more to rock. He talked his folks into giving him a guitar for his birthday when he was 12. By the time he was 15, his mother and stepfather had separated and he was paying his own rent rather than living at home, filled with the bitterness and anger that is expressed in his songs.

Those feelings flare up when he's asked what high school he attended. "I'd like not to be associated with any of that," Vedder says abruptly. "They didn't treat me well."Later, Vedder softens his answer. "Well, maybe it was just that I wasn'y going to like anybody because I had to work and I had to explain to my teachers why I wasn't keeping up. "I'd fall asleep and things in class and they'd lecture me about the reality of their classroom. I said one day, 'You want to see my reality?' I opened up my backpack to where you usually keep your pencils. That's where I kept my bills . . . electric bills, rent . . . That was my reality" Vedder, who supported himself by working at a Long's Drug Store in Encinitas, eventually dropped out of school. The anger returns when he's asked about that period. "I resented everybody around me who drove up in a car that someone provided for them . . . [with] insurance that someone provided for them," he says. "I'd be underneath some shelf putting price tags on tomato soup and I'd watch them come in . . . Obnoxious with their [expletive] prom outfits on, buying condoms and being loud about it.""I'd think, 'Those [expletives].' Maybe I would have been doing that too, if the circumstances were different. . . . Maybe that would have made me more forgiving, but I wasn't very forgiving at all. Everything was just such a [expletive] struggle for years."With little money or goals, he had begun sinking into a shadowy world that brought out his survival instincts. "There is a thing that happens when you are not as priviledged and you start hanging out with a seedier crowd because you can afford to do the same things," he says. "And all of a sudden the big night out is sitting in somebody's trailer, smoking something or getting hold of something to put up your nose." "It is real easy to get into the lower depths and get intertwined. But I was always aware of that kind of thing. . . . I didn't want to be put on a leash by any kind of conservative, constrictive parent." "I didn't want to be in that world, but I also didn't want to be in the web of this other thing. I was getting swallowed up in it, but something made me realize it was time to get away or I was going to be just another loser."

His mother and brothers had already moved back to Chicago, and he decided to join them. After a couple of years there, Vedder returned to San Diego in 1984, accompanied by his girlfriend Beth Liebling, a writer. By this time, he had learned the identity of his real father and had picked up a high school equivalency diploma.

He felt it would help him get a better job. Music remained just a hobby, not a career choice for him. He worked nights as a hotel security guard and spent his days making demo tapes on a home recorder. Gradually, he got involved in the San Diego music scene, spending a short period in a band called Bad Radio. Though he had been in a couple of garage bands earlier in Encinitas, the transition to a real band was difficult for the shy Vedder. For the first show, he wore a mask--actually, goggles with the lenses painted over--so that he wouldn't have to look at the crowd.

Eventually he quit the group, feeling that the members weren't serious about things. While he was looking for another band situation, Jack Irons, a friend who was formerly in the Red Hot Chili Peppers, gave him a tape from a Seattle musician who was putting together a new group. That musician, guitarist Stone Gossard, had been in Mother Love Bone, a highly regarded group whose promise ended when singer Andrew Wood died of a heroin overdose in 1990. After listening to the tape, Vedder went surfing and the music played over and over in his head. In the company of the waves, he began framing lyrics to go with the music.

He raced back home to his recorder, and with the sand still on his feet he sang the words to the song that eventually became "Alive," one of the centerpieces on the first Pearl Jam album.

Sebelumnya kt sdh pernah bahas mengenai album perdana "Ten".Album "versus" memberi nuansa baru lebih galak dr album sebelumnya "ten",harmoni kocokan gitar ala grunge ( duet Stone dan Mc.Cready ) lebih sangar di album ini,dibuka dgn lagu "Go" yg lngsung menghentak,dilanjutkan dgn "animal" yg sama dasyatnya.Pada nomor "daughter" mulai agak down,tp ini bukan lagu bwt bergenit2 ria,klo sy tangkap ini lagu tentang gugatan seorang anak kepada orang tuanya,wah.Tembang "dissident" patut juga diacungi jempol dua,kemudian "Glorified G","WMA","Blood","Rearviewmirror","Rats" dan lagu enak yang judulnya panjang ( kata mr.eddie "this is the long tittle in pearl jam cataloug....." )"elderely woman in a counter in the small town","leash" dan terakhir "Indiference" ( di DVD-nya duet dengan Ben Harper tambah keren aja lagu terakhir ini. Dari nomor "go" sampe "indiference" jelas sudah pearl jam emang band grunge yg patut diperhitungkan di jagad ini,dan salah satu pendekar terdepan pengusung aliran grunge.
Di tahun 94,vitalogy pun rilis,dari judul album nya aja nuansa kelam ,kematian,kesedihan,dan pain sudah tercium( apalagi pake istilah kesehatan segala dan ada Vitalogy Health Club untuk para fans-nya )dibuka dgn "last exit" dan "spin the black circle" yg menghentak,kemudian "not for you",dan "tremor cristh" yg enak bwt body surf klo ntar Pearl Jam ke Indonesia ( when?? ),ada lagu sedih "Nothingman" ,dihentak lagi dengan "Whipping",selipan lagu "Aye Davenita", "Cordurouy","Satan Beds", lagu unik ekperimenya mr.Eddie "Bugs" ( .....i'got bug in my room.....,do i eat them,do i kill them....wah,wah ),"betterman" yang asyik didengar, terakhir ditutup dengan "Immortality". Album ini memberi nuansa baru yang lain lagi dari "TEN" dan "Versus". Kesimpulanya dari ketiga Album Pearl Jam yang sudah kita bahas "Ten","Versus",dan "Vitalogy" semuanya memiliki nuansa yang berbeda belum lagi lagu2 yang tidak masuk album seperti "Yellowledbetter","State of Love n Trust" dan lainnya emang patut dikoleksi dan lagu wajib bagi generasi berikutnya. Selanjutnya kita akan bahas album Pearl Jam selanjutnya "No Code","Yield","Binaural","Riot Act","Pearl Jam".

It's a sad paradox of these times that the artists who most successfully express our fears and anxieties are the ones who are least able to cope with the burdens of fame. Whether it's Sinéad O'Connor, who masochistically invites humiliation with public displays of emotional nakedness, or Kurt Cobain, who finally just gave up, it's sometimes tempting to say what Frank Sinatra once told George Michael – that is, "Stop complaining and enjoy the ride." But then, Frank is not exactly the most sensitive guy himself.
No one regrets that he's too famous now to be Ian MacKaye of Fugazi more than Eddie Vedder does. As it was for Cobain, it's difficult for Vedder to adjust to the fact that the people who used to beat him up in school are now among his biggest fans. While Vitalogy is not the calculatedly anti-commercial album that In Utero was rumored to be (but really wasn't) before it was released, the one designed to alienate all the fans Vedder doesn't like, it is a wildly uneven and difficult record, sometimes maddening, sometimes ridiculous, often powerful.
"As privileged as a whore" is how Vedder sums up his fame in "Immortality." "Victims in demand for public show." In "Corduroy," success has left him disaffected and no longer in control of his destiny: "I'm already cut off like I feared/I'll end up alone like I began," he sings before concluding: "All the things that others want for me/Can't buy what I want because it's free." Ironically nostalgic for the desperately troubled youth that inspired his best and most tormented songs, he sings on "Not for You": "All that's sacred comes from youth/Naive and true with no power/Nothing to do/I still remember/Why don't you?" Like Pete Townshend, whose Quadrophenia was the soundtrack of Vedder's adolescence, Vedder seems afraid that while once he was the Punk, he's now the Godfather.
Vedder is also more haunted by intimations of mortality than ever before – not exactly a new theme for him but a chilling one for a record whose title means "the study of life." The album opens with a death-obsessed song called "Last Exit," and its final track, "Stupid-mop," concludes with a meditation on suicide. On "Immortality," Vedder acknowledges, "Cannot stay long/Some die just too young."
Vitalogy has a number of gripping songs that match the soaring anthems of Ten, the extended grooves of Vs. or the poetry of either record. The first three tracks are a promising start: "Last Exit," "Not for You" and especially "Spin the Black Circle," a revvedup thrash tribute to vinyl, rock harder than anything Pearl Jam have ever done. "Whipping" and "Corduroy" are also hard edged and catchy. "Better Man" is a haunting ballad about a woman trapped in a bad relationship; it recalls the character study "Elderly Woman Behind the Counter in a Small Town" on Vs. As on "Daughter," also from Vs., Vedder's empathy for and identification with women throughout Vitalogy is remarkably affecting and unforced.
Interspersed among the stronger tracks, though, are throwaways and strange experiments that don't always work. The demented polka "Bugs," which features Vedder, backed by a discordant accordion, ranting paranoiacally about insects, makes an uncharacteristic stab at humor but ends up being more silly than funny. "Pry, To" is a one-minute doodle that consists of Vedder spelling out the word privacy over and over until we get the point already.
But the most bizarre cut on the record is the last one, "Stupidmop," a seven-minute hommage to the Beatles' "Revolution 9." Consisting of tape loops of distressed voices over banshee guitar howls, the song begs the question, "Is anyone still listening out there?" It opens with a young girl repeating "My spanking, that's the only thing I want so much." "Why is that better than a hug?" a woman asks her. "Because you get closer to the person," the girl replies. The cut closes with a dialogue that is even more disturbing than it might ordinarily be in the wake of Kurt Cobain's death. A man asks a woman, "Do you ever think that you actually would kill yourself?" "Well, if I thought about it real deep, I believe I would," she answers. They're the last words on the album.
Bart Simpson once daydreamed that he was a rock star with a phony British accent, singing, "Me Fans Are Stupid Pigs." Some may think Vedder has reached the point where he thinks his efforts are just Pearl Jam before swine; they'll dismiss this record as swerving dangerously close to being contemptuous of his audience. But Vitalogy isn't Lou Reed's Metal Machine Music, nor does it seem like a tossed-off interlude like Zooropa. It's more a portrait of an artist in crisis, a man who hasn't yet decided what direction to take next.

Sir Paul McCartney is set to share the stage with Pearl Jam’s Eddie Vedder to benefit filmmaker David Lynch’s meditation charity.
The concert – also slated to include Sheryl Crow and Moby – will take place at the Radio City Music Hall in New York on April 4, with proceeds going to the David Lynch Foundation.
Lynch set up the charity to provide funds for in-school “Quiet Time” programs utilizing the stress-reducing Transcendental Meditation technique. In the past year, the Foundation has provided millions of dollars for thousands of students, teachers, and parents to learn to meditate. The Foundation also provides funds for independent research institutions to assess the effects of the program on creativity, intelligence, brain functioning, academic performance, ADHD and other learning disorders, anxiety, depression, and substance abuse. The filmmaker attributes much of his creativity to the practice.

Transplant adalah band gabungan dari musisi punk berbakat yaitu Travis Barker ( Blink 182,Box Car Racer ),Tim Amstrong ( Rancid ),dan Rob Aston "Skinhead Rob" ( Box Car Racer ). Campuran aroma hiphop,punk dan reggae sangat terasa di band ini.
Terbentuk Desember 1999 di Los Angeles oleh Tim Amstrong dan Rob Aston. Mereka semula memainkan musik mereka tanpa seorang Drummer ,tapi kemudian mereka mengundang Travis Barker untuk join the band, dan ajakan mereka pun disambut baik oleh Travis. Temple Of The Dog adalah band keroyokan yang digagas oleh vokalis Soundgarden, Chris Cornell. Band ini didirikan sebagai penghargaan terhadap almarhum vokalis Mother Love Bone, Andrew Wood. yang meninggal karena kecanduan obat2an. Unsur Grunge-nya sangat kental dalam album semata wayang mereka, karena personel band ini adalah gabungan dua band Grunge tersohor dari Seattle, yaitu Soundgarden & Mother Love Bone. P.O.D tahun ini kembali mengeluarkan album baru dengan titel "When Angel & Serpents Dance",dengan single "Shine With Me" dan kembalinya Marcos sang gitaris.Berikut sedikit sejarah terbentuknya P.O.D. ,adalah grup musik beraliran musik punk rock yang berasal dari Amerika Serikat. P.O.D. adalah kepanjangan dari "Payable on Death"( kira2 maksudnya adalah apa yang kita perbuat di dunia akan kita bayar setelah mati ).Grup ini sendiri dibentuk pada tahun 1992 di San Ysidro oleh Marcos (gitaris) dan Wuv (dramer). Keduanya saat itu sangat terpengaruh gaya jazz dan reggae namun sekaligus jatuh cinta sama gaya punk dan grunge grup semacam Greenday, Pennywise, Bad Brains dan The Vandals.

Marcos lantas mengajak sepupunya, Sonny (vokalis) serta Traa untuk bergabung. Lewat label sendiri, anak-anak , P.O.D. berhasil menjual album Brown, Snuff the Punk serta Live sebanyak 40 ribu keping.

Pada 1998, Atlantic Records tertarik akan konsep musik P.O.D. dan mengontrak mereka untuk beberapa album. Setahun kemudian, P.O.D. merilis debutnya yang berjudul "The Fundamental Elements of Southtown" di bawah bendera label besar tersebut. Dari album ini, keluar single Southtown dan Rock the Party (Off the Hook), sekaligus berhasil memperoleh penghargaan platinum.

Pada tahun 2001, P.O.D. merilis album kedua bertajuk Satellite. Album ini mencatat kesuksesan besar lewat lagu andalan seperti "Alive", "Youth of the Nation" dan "Boom" yang disuguhkan lewat leburan unsur musik hip-hop, reggae serta hardcore.

Pada Februari 2003, Marcos sebagai sang pendiri P.O.D tiba-tiba keluar dari formasi dengan alasan perbedaan visi dalam bermusik. Gitaris baru, Jason Truby lantas masuk menggantikannya dan ikut terlibat dalam penggarapan single Sleeping Awake yang menghiasi album soundtrack film "The Matrix: Reloaded".

"I Called him A Hero of 1990"and "The Legend Of GRUNGE" .Eddie Vedder was born Edward Louis Severson III in the Chicago suburb of Evanston, Illinois, the son of Karen Lee Vedder and Edward Louis Severson, Jr.His father was a lounge musician.His parents divorced in 1965, when Vedder was a year old. His mother soon remarried a man named Peter Mueller, an attorney, and young Vedder was raised believing that Mueller was his biological father. His adopted name became Edward Mueller.While living in Evanston, Vedder's family fostered seven younger children in a group home.
In the mid-1970s, the family, including Vedder's three younger half-brothers, moved to San Diego County, California. It was at this point that Vedder, who had received a guitar from his mother on his 12th birthday, began turning to music as a source of comfort. He particularly found solace in The Who's 1973 album, Quadrophenia.His mother and Mueller divorced when Vedder was in his late teens. His mother and brothers moved back to the Chicago area, but Vedder remained with his stepfather in California so he would not have to change high schools.
It was not until after the divorce that Vedder learned the truth about his parentage, that Mueller was really his stepfather. Vedder had met his biological father briefly as a child, but had believed that Severson was merely an old friend of his parents. By the time Vedder learned the truth, Severson had died of multiple sclerosis. Vedder's already bad relationship with his stepfather became increasingly strained. He eventually dropped out of San Dieguito High School in his senior year due to the pressures of balancing school with a nightly job at a drug store in Encinitas.He joined the rest of his family in Chicago, and it was at this time that he changed his name to Eddie Vedder, "Vedder" being his mother's maiden name.
In the early 1980s, Vedder earned his high school GED and briefly attended a community college near Chicago.

In 1984, Vedder returned to San Diego, California with his girlfriend, Beth Liebling. He kept busy recording demo tapes
at his home and working various jobs, including positions as a night attendant at a local gas station and a contracted security guard at the La Valencia Hotel in La Jolla. Vedder had several stints in San Diego area bands, including Surf and Destroy and The Butts.One of those bands, called Indian Style,included future Rage Against the Machine and Audioslave drummer Brad Wilk.

Pennywise dibentuk tahun 1988 di Hermosa Beach,Californiadengan beranggotakan empat orang yaitu Jim Linberg ( vocal ), Fletcher Dragge ( gitar ),Byron McMackin ( drums ), dan Jason Thirsk ( bass ).Mereka merilis mini album :"A World from the wise" ( 1989 ) dan "Wildcard" ( 1992 ).
Pada tahun 1990 mereka tandatangan kontrak dengan Epitaph Records dan merilis debut album "Pennywise" di tahun 1991 dengan single keren "Wouldn't Be Nice" dan "Bro Hym".Album ini sangat cepat tersebar dikomunitas2 punx dan fans mereka semakin banyak.Tema2 yang diangkat mencerminkan sikap mental positif untuk generasi anak muda ( Generation X ).
Setelah debut album dirilis Jim Linberg mengundurkan diri dari band dan digantikan sementara oleh Jason Thirsk dan Randy Bradbury menggantikan posisi Thirsk.
Di tahun 1992 posisi vocal diisi oleh Dave Quackenbush ( lead vocal The Vandals ),dan Thirsk kembali diposisi Bassis.Di Tahun 1992 juga setelah Linberg menikah dia kembali ke Pennywise mengisi posisi semula yaitu sebagai vocalist.
Dengan kembalinya Linberg, Pennywise kembali merilis album "UNKNOWN ROAD"(1993),dan album ini langsung menjadi hits dan menjadikan band yang sangatdiperhitungkan di musik PUNK.Ada beberapa lagu andalanya antara lain"Homesick" dan "City Is Burning".
Di tahun 1995 ketika terjadi demam punk di seluruh dunia ditandai dengan naik daunya The Offspring dan Rancid membuat Pennywise dilirik oleh beberapa Major Label.Tapi Pennywise menolak semuanya dan tetap setia di jalur indie labeldengan Epitaph Records sampai sekarang ( emang sikap yang patut diacungi 2 jempol ).Dan ditahun itu juga mereka merilis album yang jadi hits juga yaitu"About Time".Ada lagu bagus disini yaitu "Every Single Day","Same Old Story","Perfect People".
Di tahun 1996, Pennywise kembali merilis album keempat, Thirsk mundur karena lagi mencoba fokus untuk berhenti akan ketergantunganya dengan minuman keras.Usahanya berhasil tapi 29 Juli 1996 dia malahan memutuskan untuk bunuh diri.( bisa lihat artikelnya di bawah )
Pasca kematian Jason Thirsk, pennywise merilis "Full Circle"(1997) dengan lagu2 andalan Society,dengan Bradbury mengganti posisinya, dan di tahun 1999 merilis "Straight Ahead".Dan diikuti oleh Live Album "Live at the Key Club"(2000) lagu "Peacefull day (live version),"Land of the Free?"(2001).Dan ditahun 2003 merilis "Came From The Ashes" dengan lagu andalan "Waiting","God Save The USA" dan tembang keren "Yesterday" (sempat munculdi film Torque),sungguh band yang produktif banget.DVD Home Movies Pennywise dirilis di tahun 2004 menampilkan video2 yang mereka buatdi tahun 1995 dan 1997.
Album kedelapan Pennywise "The Fuse" rilis pada 9 Agustus 2005 denganhits mereka lagu "Knocked Down".Dan ditahunyang sama mereka me-remastered album lama mereka seperti :Pennywise,Unknown Road,About Time, dan Full Circle pada 8 maret 2005.
Setelah rilis The Fuse ada rumor mereka bubar (wah),setelah tour merekadengan nama Australian Tour di cancel.Dan langsung dibantah oleh sang frontman Jim Linberg.Di tahun 2007 ada kabar menarikalbum kesembilan mereka akan dirilis. Tapi belum ada kabar pastimengenai berita diatas. Yang pasti mereka berencana ikut dalam the 2007 Vans Warped Tour.
Mereka rajin ikut dalam kompilasi album seperti Punk O' Rama , Dave MirraBMX ( lagu "greed" ),ESPN Ultimate X ( lagu "who's On Your Side" )

All hail seattle's new sons of Zeppelin, still kicking and shrieking with a whole lotta moxie. Soundgarden bolts out of the starting gate on Badmotorfinger with a nifty high-speed inversion of the "How Many More Times" riff on "Rusty Cage." It then proceeds to upend the entire Zep-lick apple cart, stitching melodic fragments and jarring time signatures together with Frankenstein enthusiasm and hauling the results over hot guitar coals. "Jesus Christ Pose," a searing put-down of somebody with a major crucifixion complex, is as good as Badmotorfinger gets, a runaway train ride of stammering guitar and psycho-jungle telegraph rhythms.
On Ten, Pearl Jam – descended from the late, lamented Mother Love Bone – hurtles into the mystic at warp speed. Singer-lyricist Eddie Vedder sometimes lets his words get way ahead of his good intentions: "I don't question/Our existence/I just question/Our modern needs" ("Garden"). Focus instead on his voice – a ragged, enraged mongrel blend of Robert Plant and James Hetfield – and the Pearls' surprising, and refreshing, melodic restraint. They wring a lot of drama out of a few declarative power chords swimming in echo.
Temple of the Dog is not a band but a one-off project recorded in memory of Love Bone vocalist and OD victim Andrew Wood, with members of both Soundgarden and the future Pearl Jam exorcising their grief with the amps at full crank. If for nothing else, buy it for the eleven-minute requiem "Reach Down," a fiercesome death-rattle blues that may some day come to be regarded as Seattle's own "In My Time of Dying."

Soundtrack Into The Wild

Sekali lagi teruji bahwa style Grunge nya sang vokalis PearlJam mr.Eddie Vedder dalam menciptakan lagu dalam soundtrack Into The Wild masih dashyat. Lagu2 nya pun sangat pas dengan isi filmnya ( saya sampai beberapa kali nonton nih film dan bahkan membeli bukunya juga... ). Album ini juga sebagai In Memory of Christopher J. McCandless, tokoh yang diceritakan dalam film ini sangat bagus diperankan oleh Emile Hirsch, benar2 menyentuh hati.

Soundtrack ini diproduseri oleh Eddie Vedder dan Adam Kasper. Eddie disini dibantu oleh beberapa artis seperti Gordon Peterson yang menulis lagu Hard Sun,Society ditulis oleh Jerry Hannan,Society guitars dan background vocal oleh Jerry Hannan.

Semua lagu2 yang ada di album ini emang tepat bwt merenung tentang segalanya lah. Tapi dari sisi pandangan saya lagu2 disini pas banget untuk merenung tentang perjalanan hidup dan bagaimana kita memaknai hidup ini. Dan juga bagaimana kita sebaiknya berinteraksi dengan alam sekitar kita maupun lingkungan kita. Hampir semua lagu disini keren semua seperti No Ceiling,Hard Sun, Society,Guaranteed, Setting Fort dan lainnya.

The Album

Pada tahun 1983, band meluncurkan album "Into The Unknown", sebuah album yang pada awalnya tidak begitu populer dan tidak begitu disukai oleh para penggemarnya. Karena dalam album ini , band dianggap terlalu jauh mengeksplorasi musiknya hingga album ini dinilai terlalu eksperimental karena menggunakan keyboard terlalu dominan. Bahkan para pengamat musik mengatakan bahwa band ini tidak terkategorikan sebagai musik punk lagi, tapi psychedelic rock. Pada saat itu, album ini tidak menghasilkan apa-apa selain kritik dari para fans. Tapi sekarang, album ini mulai dicari oleh para kolektor album Bad Religion. Album ini banyak dibajak karena jumlahnya yang sedikit.
Pada tahun 1984, Greg Hetson dari Circle Jerks masuk dan menggantikan posisi Mr.Brett. Bad Religion pun merilis EP dengan judul "Back To The Known". Dengan beat lagu yang semakin lambat, band kehilangan jati diri mereka dan band ini sempat vakum jika tidak disebut bubar.
Pada tahun 1986, band bersatu kembali dan meluncurkan album "Suffer" dan mereka kembali dalam format band punk seperti sebelumnya. Album inilah yang menjadi titik balik kebangkitan band ini. Album ini dinilai sebagai album terbaik oleh majalah maximum rock'n roll karena seolah mengingatkan para fans pada Bad Religion di awal-awal pembentukannya yang memainkan lagu-lagu dengan beat cepat, distorsi yang menghentak dan lirik yang keras disertai vokal yang melodius. Album ini sekaligus menjadi pemicu berkembangnya budaya dan sub kultur punk di Southern California karena album ini akhirnya menjadi genre wajib yang diikuti oleh hampir semua band punk dari Southern California, misalnya : Rancid, The Offspring, dan lain-lain. Lagu Do What You Want,Suffer dapat disimak di album ini.
Album "No Control" yang dirilis pada tahun 1989 dan "Against The Grain" tahun 1990 dan diikuti album "Generator" pada tahun 1992 juga mendapat predikat album rock terbaik dan semakin mendongkrak popularitas band ini, khususnya di Amerika bagian timur/east coast (New York, Washington, etc). Sebelum album "Generator" selesai dirilis, tahun 1991, Peter Finestone mengundurkan diri untuk lebih memfokuskan diri pada band-nya yang lain, The Fishermen, dan posisinya digantikan oleh Bobby Schayer.
Dengan gaya dan aransemen musik yang semakin matang dan menentang trend aliran musik heavy metal dan progressive rock saat itu, Bad Religion hengkang dari Epitaph Records dan bergabung dengan Atlantic Records dan tak lama setelah itu mereka segera merilis album full mereka yang ketujuh, "Recipe For Hate" pada pertengahan tahun 1993 yang sebenarnya lebih merupakan penjualan hak rilis album itu oleh Epitaph Records kepada Atlantic Records. Di album ini lagu2nya memang keren2 seperti Kerosene,American Jesus,All Good Soldier,Watch It Die ( ada suaranya Eddie Vedder sebagai backing vocal ),Man with A Mission,Skycraper,Don't Pray On Me,dan lainnya.
Pada tahun 1994, "Stranger Than Fiction" dirilis, tapi Mr.Brett segera mengundurkan diri saat album itu selesai. Mr.Brett memutuskan untuk mengundurkan diri karena disibukkan oleh The Offspring yang saat itu mengukir sejarah sebagai band dengan penjualan kaset terbanyak di dunia musik underground dan direkomendasikan untuk masuk ke dalam major label oleh Mr.Brett. Namun. konon perginya Mr. Brett dari Bad Religion lebih disebabkan oleh ketidakcocokan dan pertengkaran yang hebat dengan basist Jay Bentley. Bahkan, Mr. Brett membentuk band baru yang salah satu lagunya "Hate You" didedikasikan pada Jay untuk menumpahkan kebenciannya. Banyak fans setia Bad Religion yang menyesali hengkangnya Mr. Brett, yang berdua dengan Gregg Graffin, dipandang sebagai penulis lirik punk rock yang sangat berbakat, kalau tidak bisa dibilang terbaik di dunia dalam genre-nya.
Mr. Brett pun kemudian fokus untuk membesarkan perusahaan rekamannya Epitaph yang akhirnya sekarang menjadi perusahaan label indie terbesar di dunia yang menjadi rumah bagi mayoritas band-band punk rock, hardcore, serta band-band rap dan hip-hop yang penuh bakat. Band-band besar yang dibesarkan oleh Epitaph antara lain Rancid, NOFX, Offspring, Descendent, dan Millencolin. Sementara band-band baru yang penuh bakat di antaranya Sage Francis (rap hip-hop) dan The Higher (pop rock).
Sepeninggal Mr. Brett, Bad Religion terus berkarya dimotori oleh Gregg Graffin seorang. Band merekrut gitaris baru yang tak kalah legendaris dalam dunia punk rock sebagai pengganti Mr Brett, yaitu Brian Baker (pernah bergabung dengan band punk legendaris "Minor Threat"). Album "The Gray Race" (1996), album pertama band ini tanpa Mr. Brett, berhasil menghapus kekhawatiran para penggemar bahwa musik Bad Religion akan kehilangan kualitas. Album tersebut benar-benar tetap setia pada citra band yang cepat, menghentak, dengan vokal penuh melodi serta lyric yang kritis. Graffin menulis sendiri semua lyric dan nada semua alat instrumen dalam lagu tersebut, dibantu dengan beberapa aransemen gitar dari Baker. cukup lumayan lagu2nya di album ini seperti Come Join Us,Punk Rock Song,Drunk Sincerety,Street Of America. Tapi terasa kurang dari unsur melodic. Namun pada album-album berikutnya, Graffin tampak kehilangan sentuhannya.
"No Substance" (1998) dipandang sebagai album terburuk oleh mayoritas fans Bad Religion. Padahal dalam album tersebut Graffin berusaha melibatkan anggota band lainnya dalam penulisan lagu. Lagu andalan di album ini adalah Raise Your voice. Tampak sekali bahwa tanpa Mr. Brett, Graffin kehilangan seorang "soul mate" yang bisa saling mendukung dan berkompetisi, dalam arti positif, untuk membuat lagi lagu-lagu punk rock yang bisa disandingkan sejajar dengan lagu-lagu legendaris khas Bad Religion sebelumnya seperti, "Do What You Want" (Album Suffer, 1988), "Along the way" (Back to the Known, 1984), dan "American Jesus" (Recipe for Hate, 1993).
Dalam meluncurkan album ketiganya "The New America" (2000) untuk Atlantic Records, Graffin mulai mendekati kembali Mr. Brett. Dan Mr. Brett bersedia berkolaborasi dengan Graffin untuk menulis lagu berjudul "Believe it" dalam album tersebut. Mr. Brett juga memainkan melodi gitar untuk lagu itu. Album tersebut merupakan sejarah bagi Bad Religion dan fansnya karena menandakan reunifikasi kembali Mr. Brett dengan Bad Religion, band yang ia dirikan bersama dengan Gregg Graffin dan Jay Bentley. Selama pembuatan album, secara alami muncul keinginan dalam diri Graffin untuk mengundang Mr. Brett bergabung kembali. Semua anggota band lain mendukung dan ketika undangan disuarakan, Mr Brett dengan mantap mengiyakan, dengan syarat Bad Religion harus kembali ke label Epitaph, perusahaan yang pada awalnya didirikan untuk memproduksi dan mendistribusikan album-album Bad Religion. Syarat tersebut tidak sulit dipenuhi karena masa kontrak dengan Atlantic Records sudah akan berakhir dan memang Bad Religion yang dimotori Graffin juga sangat ingin kembali ke Epitaph Records. Fans band tersebut di seluruh dunia sangat gembira dan bersemangat menunggu prospek bersatunya kembali dua penulis lagu punk rock terbaik di dunia, Mr. Brett dan Gregg Graffin serta label Epitaph dengan Bad Religion.
Album "The Process of Belief" (2002) merupakan album pertama Bad Religion untuk Epitaph. Band mempunyai drummer baru yang muda dan berbakat yakni Brooks Wackerman (pernah tergabung dengan Suicidal Tendencies). Bobby Schayer meninggalkan band karena alasan cidera punggung. Namun, dia kecewa karena merasa tidak diberi cukup kesempatan untuk pemulihan. Dengan bergabungnya Wackerman, beat musik Bad Religion lebih cepat dan bertenaga. Energi baru tersebut melengkapi bergabungnya sumber energi utama band yaitu Mr. Brett dan Graffin. Album mereka disambut baik oleh fans dan kritikus. Bad Religion tidak terlena dengan pujian atau lekang oleh usia. Kreasi terus bertumbuh melalui album "Empire Strike First" (2004) dan terakhir "New Maps off Hell" (2007).
Menginjak 27 tahun eksistensinya Bad Religion tetap loyal dan setia pada akar musik yang mereka bentuk dan pada harapan yang tersirat dalam lyric mereka ditengah dunia yang penuh pesimism. Dunia yang diwarnai fanatisme agama, perang, kekerdilan aparat pemerintah, dan mental remaja yang rusak oleh kapitalisme. Bad Religion sejak awal merupakan suara lantang yang memecahkan hiruk pikuk buram tersebut. Suara yang dibagi oleh banyak orang, bukan hanya penggemar punk rock. Well inilah punk band legendaris yang dibentuk pada tahun 1980 di Southern California. Dengan personilnya berpendidikan dan kritis telah berhasil menjadi sebuah fenomena yang sangat berpengaruh dengan memainkan lagu-lagu beraliran punk dengan beat khas punck rock yang cepat namun melodius dengan lirik-lirik kritis yang berkisar masalah-masalah sosial, politik dan agama.
Struktur kalimat-kalimat dalam lyric yang variatif dipadukan dengan gaya bahasa yang puitis dan vocabulary yang bahkan memaksa orang Amerika sendiri untuk membuka kamus, membuat band ini unik dan cepat memperoleh simpatisan yang cukup banyak ketika mereka mengeluarkan album pertama mereka pada 1981 di daerah Southern California.
Personil band ini adalah Greg Graffin (vocal) , Jay Bentley, Bas/backing (vocal) , Jay Ziskrout (drums) , and Brett Gurewitz (guitar/backing vocals) atau lebih dikenal sebagai Mr.Brett. Setelah peluncuran EP pertama dengan label Epitaph Records milik Mr.Brett yang juga merangkap sebagai manager band, pada tahun 1982, band yang baru menyelesaikan sekolah setingkat SMU ini meluncurkan album full berjudul "How Could Hell Any Worse?". Namun, di tengah pengerjaan album ini, Jay Ziskrout mengundurkan diri dari band dan posisinya digantikan oleh Peter Finestone.
Greg Graffin, the frontman dari band ini menyandang gelar Master di bidang geologi dari UCLA dan meraih gelar Ph.D dalam bidang zoology dari Cornell University. Disertasi Greg Graffin untuk Cornell University adalah sebuah studi komprehensif tentang ilmu pengetahuan yang dititikberatkan pada teori Darwin yang kontroversial karena berkaitan dengan masalah ketuhanan dan agama dan bagaimana teori tersebut mempengaruhi cara berpikir pada seseorang. Disertasi ini dipublikasikan dan didedikasikan untuk para fans Bad Religion.

Ini berita yang menyenangkan bagi kami pecinta PEARL JAM terutama album yang fenomenal bangget yaitu TEN. Mereka tahun ini tepatnya 24 Maret 2009 akan merilis ulang album TEN.

“The band loved the original mix of Ten, but were also interested in what it would sound like if I were to deconstruct and remix it,” says producer Brendan O’Brien.

“The original Ten sound is what millions of people bought, dug and loved, so I was initially hesitant to mess around with that. After years of persistent nudging from the band, I was able to wrap my head around the idea of offering it as a companion piece to the original – giving a fresh take on it, a more direct sound.”

TEN RE-DESIGN
Pearl Jam bassist Jeff Ament, who served as the art director for the original Ten packaging, reprised his role for the reissues collaborating with designer, Andy Fischer, of Cameron Crowe’s Vinyl Films (Into the Wild soundtrack LP, Vanilla Sky soundtrack LP, Harold and Maude anniversary edition soundtrack LP).
"The goal was to assemble the ultimate fan-piece,” explains Fischer. “Something Pearl Jam lovers could pore over as they experience an indelible record all over again, in an entirely new way."
“The original concept was about really being together as a group and entering into the world of music as a true band...a sort of all-for-one deal,” says Jeff Ament. “There were some elements of the original Ten artwork that didn't turn out the way we had hoped, due to time constraints. With this reissue, we’ve been able to take our time and invest resources into making the design the way we had originally intended.”

Desain album TEN memang sangat luar biasa, seperti kata jeff ament "itu memang mencerminkan kebersamaan mereka sebagai Pearl Jam". Memang sampe saat ini band ini dan album ini sangat menginspirasi hidup saya, GRUNGE not Dead ,and no "Betterman" like PEARL JAM.

Kemunculan band ini di era tahun 90an, bergenre GRUNGE ato seattle sound,coz komunitas ini pertama kali muncul di seattle,amerika. Kita cerita sedikit dulu tentang kejayaan GRUNGE ini. Aliran musik GRUNGE mulai menghentak dunia semenjak kemunculan album NIRVANA "NEVERMIND" dengan single dashyat Smells like teen spirit yang mampu menggusur the king of pop Michael Jackson di tangga teratas musik dunia. Waah.... Maka mulailah jawara2 penggusung aliran grunge bermunculan seperti Soundgarden,Alice n' Chains,Blind Melon,Stone Temple Pilots,Pearl Jam dan masih banyak lagi. Ada yang masih bergerak di jalur indie dan ada yang sudah diambil major labels. Konon kata GRUNGE merupakan sebutan lain dari teriakan babi. Pengaruh grunge ini sampe ke Indonesia sebut aja Pas band,Pure Saturday,dll sangat terinpirasi dengan genre ini.

Btw kembali ke PEARL JAM.....

Pearl Jam berdiri di atas fondasi sejarah panjang kultur Seattle Sounds yang populer di akhir 80-an. Pemain gitar Stone Gossard dan pembetot bass Jeff Ament lebih dahulu populer di ruang kultur tersebut melalui band bernama Green River, bersama dengan dua pentolan grup Mudhoney, Mark Arm dan Steve Turner. Gossard dan Ament lantas mendirikan Mother Love Bone, selepas pecahnya Green River, bersama vokalis flamboyan bernama Andrew Wood. Jelang rilis album mainstream perdana bersama major label, Andrew Wood meninggal dunia lantaran overdosis heroin. Untuk meneruskan karir bermusiknya, Gossard dan Ament lantas menggaet gitaris Mike McCready yang notabene merupakan teman se-almamater ketika sekolah menengah tingkat atas dengan Stone Gossard.
Ketiganya kemudian membuat beberapa demo lagu dengan bantuan penabuh drum dari band Soundgarden, Matt Cameron (saat ini menjadi drummer Pearl Jam). Untuk audisi vokalis, rekaman demo tersebut dikirimkan kepada remaja San Diego bernama Eddie Vedder melalui mantan drummer band Red Hot Chili Peppers, Jack Irons, yang nantinya juga sempat menjadi anggota Pearl Jam. Vedder kemudian mengisi tiga buah lagu, sebuah mini-opera dikenal dengan "Mamasan Trilogy" (di masa depan menjadi lagu Alive, Once dan Footsteps). Ketiga lagu tersebut akhirnya mengantarkan Vedder terbang ke Seattle, untuk menjalani sejumlah rehearsal bersama calon rekan band-nya.

Selepas proyek tersebut, Eddie Vedder resmi menjadi vokalis dari band baru yang diberi nama Mookie Blaylock (merujuk pada nama bintang basket NBA pada saat itu). Karena permasalahan legalitas, tepat sebelum menandatangani kontrak dengan Epic Records, band berganti nama menjadi Pearl Jam.

SUPERMAN is DEAD

Inilah one of the biggest punk band di Indonesia. Berasal dari sebuah kampung internasional di Bali yang mereka sebut Kuta Rock City ( kayak lagu nya KISS Detroit Rock City,hehe ). Superman is Dead ato SID ini beranggotakan tiga anak muda yang berjiwa rebel style. Mereka adalah Bobby Kool ( lead vocal ),Eka Rock ( bassist ) dan Jerinx a.k.a JRX ( drummer ). Sebelum ngetop kira2 tahun 90an gt mereka menggunakan nama Superman Silvergun ( diambil dari lagunya Stone Temple Pilots ) terus mereka mengunah namanya menjadi Superman is Dead ( tidak ada orang sempurna di dunia ini bahkan superman pun bias mati,wah ). Pertam kali kemunculan mereka sering muncul di konser2 punk di denpasar maupun di daeah di Bali seperti mengisi acara noisy noon di GOR denpasar,konser punk di tabanan gedung Mario taun 95an. Mereka seneng banget membawakan lagu NOFX the brews di akhir konser. Yah memang seh karakter vokalnya si bobby kool rada mirip Fat Mike-nya NOFX. Mereka taun2 tersebut lebih banyak mengeluarkan rekaman jalur indie seperti album “case 15” th.1997, “Superman is Dead” th.2002, dan “Bad Bad Bad” th.2002. Di tahun 2003 dengan negosiasi yang alot akhirnya SID setuju dengan tawaran kontrak dari Sony-BMG dan mereka pun mulai tahapan untuk go national dengan mengeluarkan album pertama di bawah Major Label yaitu “Kuta Rock City” dengan single mereka Punk Hari Ini dan mereka pun mulai tour promo mereka. Album ini sangat disambut baik oleh publik nusantara karena mereka mempunyai cirri khas tersendiri dari lirik dan sound khas punk. Saya sendiri sempat menonton konser mereka di senayan pas acara MTV Threesome Party,mereka di tempatkan di posisi teratas sebelum band utama. Dan terakhir saya nonton pas jadi band pembukanya konser MXPX di senayan jakarta. Hail yeah…,Di tahun 2004 keluarlah album Hangover Decade ( saya punya baju kaosnya,hehe ) berisi lagu2 mereka di album2 terdahulu macam bad bad bad,white town. Dan di tahun 2006 keluarlah Black Market Love dengan single perdananya Bukan Pahlawan ( klo The Offspring punya lagu No Hero,hehe.. ) dan hits single kedua Black Market Love, sangat terasa nuansa Rancid,Social Distortion di album ini,dan salah satu lagu yaitu goodbye whiskie mengingatkan pada lagu2nya mike ness ( vokalnya Social Distortion ) di album solonya. Mereka orang2 yang sangat ramah pas mereka lagi wawancara di sebuah stasiun tv lokal di bandung dalam rangka promo BML masih smpet nerima fans diajak foto bersama.
Di tahun 2009 terdengar kabar dari website resmi mereka akan keluar album terbaru dengan judul Angels and The Outsiders ( bukan Angels and The Airwaves lho,hehe ) dengan single andalan mereka Kuat Kita Bersinar. Hail yeah to Superman Is Dead

Salah satu jawara band punk yang masih bernaung dalam satu label Epitaph Record. Dimotori oleh sang vokalis Fat Mike telah mengeluarkan beberapa album. Salah satu album yang masih terngiang ditelinga saya adalah PUNK in DRUBLIC. Disini di album ini rata2 lagunya serius semua, bernada sedih nan melodius kenceng mirip model2 lagunya Bad Religion. Pas waktu2 zaman2 SMU lagi trend maen Band,tahun 1992 emang PUNK lagi naek daun. Emang sih rata2 band2 jebolan Epitaph record mirip2 dengan sang senior Bad Religion apalagi pemilik epitaph record adalah sang gitaris Bad Religion Mr.Brett Gurewitz. Jakarta Setelah sempat terancam gagal menghibur komunitas punk Jakarta, akhirnya band punk legendaris asal AS, NOFX beraksi di PRJ, Kemayoran, Sabtu (21/4/2007) malam. Disaksikan lebih dari 5.000 penonton, Fat Mike (vokal/bas), Erik Sandin (drum), Eric Melvin (gitar), dan El Hefe (gitar/trompet) unjuk kebolehan membawakan lebih dari 15 lagu.

NOFX tampil sederhana dengan t-shirt, celana pendek, plus sneakers-nya. Namun aksi panggung mereka yang super energic pun disambut dengan penonton yang tak kalah aksi. Konser dibuka dengan lagu 'Dinosaur Will Die'. Dilanjutkan dengan 'Linoleum' dan 'Pharmacist Daughter'.Di tengah konser, Fat Mike mengaku heran. Katanya, penonton di Jakarta cenderung sopan. Padahal, penonton yang mayoritas penyuka musik punk itu sudah ber-mossing dan ber-pogo ria. "Kacamata saya sampai hancur," ujar Ronald, salah satu penonton.Sejak dibentuk tahun 1983 silam di Los Angeles, NOFX terkenal dengan lagu-lagu satire yang penuh kritik terhadap politik, rasisme, hingga agama. Pada Asian Tour Respect for Unity kali ini pun, NOFX tak ketinggalan mengkritik Presiden George W Bush lewat lagu 'Falling In Love/Idiot Son'. "Lagu ini tentang Presiden Amerika, Bush. Presiden paling buruk di seluruh dunia," teriaknya lantang.Konser berakhir hampir tengah malam. Sebelum meninggalkan panggung, NOFX menyebar pick gitar, stick drum, dan tak lupa berfoto dengan penonton di baris depan. Musik yang keras dari band asal San Fransisco itu membuat 500 polisi siaga mengamankan konser. Untungnya, hingga konser berakhir tak terjadi kerusuhan yang berarti. Setelah di Jakarta mereka lanjutkan konser mereka di Bali tepatnya di Hard Rock Cafe Bali. Konser di Bali serba dadakan malahan para personil NOFX sendiri ikut menyebar pamflet bahwa mereka nanti malam akan konser,wah.

Band HistoryHere's a great idea, let's get the guy in the band who smokes the most pot to write a band history. That's me. The guy who couldn't remember what was said five minutes ago if his life depended on it. You try and write down the last 16 years of your life and make it seem relevant… First Practice 1983Here's what I do remember. I was sitting with a kid named Dillon in our usual spot with the other punkers during lunchtime at Fairfax high school. He was a drummer, and we were dissatisfied with the bands we were in. My band consisted of me and my one and only Punk Rock friend both playing guitar and singing and that was it. Neither one of us had finished any songs. Not quite a recipe for success.So I sez to my friend, let's start a band. A real band, a band that does stuff. A band that writes songs, practices, puts out records, and goes on tour. We talked about who else we wanted in this band.
We knew lots of good people from going to punk gigs around LA. He knew a Bass player named Mike who used to be in a band called False Alarm. We both knew a guy named Steve from Orange County who we agreed would make a great front man. We made some calls and arranged to meet and have a first practice. That's when I first met Mike. Mike was a huge Misfits fan. He looked like a Misfits fan. His hair was long in front and it was all hairsprayed together to a point down the middle of his face in what was called a "Devilock". Mike had some songs for us to play. I had written a song called "Take Part". It sounded an awful lot like Minor Threat's version of the Monkees' Stepping Stone. Steve didn't go to that first practice, he couldn't get a ride up from Orange county.
After that first practice Dillon quit and Mike called up Erik. Mike and Erik had met a couple of years earlier while skateboarding around Hollywood. Erik liked Mike's Black Flag skateboard. It was Punk. Mike had asked Erik to join False Alarm back then, but Erik's mom wouldn't let him do it 'cuz he had no driver's license yet. Later on, when we asked him to play drums with us he was in a band called Caustic Cause. Erik joined us but his other band would have to have priority. We were supposed to be a 4-piece but practiced as a 3-piece, Steve hadn't made it to one practice yet. The NameMike and I use to hang out at his house and listen to all of his punk rock records. We tried to come up with good band names. I said No FX after a band who had put out one record and broken up called Negative FX. Mike agreed that it was the best one so far. There seemed to be a lot of gimmicky bands around at the time. We like to think that our name meant we were against that shit. In 1983 three of the four members were into the straight edge movement following Minor Threat's first single, but we were never a straight edge band, OK?First GigThere was a club on Selma and Argyle in Hollywood called Cathay de Grande. Some of the bands we would go see there were D.R.I., the Stains, Reagan Youth, Minor Threat, Black Flag before Henry, the Bangs who later became the Bangles, and Social Distortion. On Tuesday nights new bands would play and it was one dollar to get in. Some friends of ours from Pomona had a band called Justice League. They were having their first gig one Tuesday and we asked them if we could use their gear and play after them. We were all there, except for Steve. We played all 4 songs we knew. For years after, those Justice League kids swore that was our best show ever. When Steve found out that we had played without him, he quit the band that he was never really in. So we were a 3-piece. Mike and I were going to trade off singing, but I could barely even play guitar, let alone sing at the same time, and that's how Mike became our singer.First DemoIt was time to record our songs and put out a tape. By some freak act of destiny, Don Bolles, of Germs fame said he would produce our demo for us if we filled up his car with gas. We made flyers advertising our Demo release and placed an ad in Flipside to send your own cassette and a self addressed stamped envelope and we would copy it for you and send it back. First Tour 1985We got letters back from people who had heard our demo. A guy named Brad wrote from Boise. If we played a gig in his garage he'd pay us $200. So we started making a lot of phone calls and got other gigs in Reno, Portland, and Ashland, Oregon. I asked Mom and Dad if we could use the Country Squire station wagon to go on our first tour, they said O.K. I had broken the rear window a month earlier, so we taped some plastic over it, threw our amps in the back, and took off for Reno. We stayed at some guy's house after the Reno gig. He wouldn't let us invite any girls back to his apartment. Someone snuck a girl in anyway and in the morning snuck her out again.
The guy found her underwear, got mad and kicked us out.In Boise we played Brad's garage. He made flyers and all the Boise punkers were there. There was a keg of some cheap beer. If I remember correctly, there was always a keg of some cheap beer. After the show Brad gave us all $50 he collected and said sorry about the rest of the money, he was broke.We played in Portland at a club called the Satyricon. The other band was called the Oily Bloodmen. Rich, the singer said that we could crash out at his place. As soon as we got back to his house, he started telling us stories about fucking little boys with baseball bats and crazy murders. Erik was scared of his house so he slept in the car. Rich turned out to be a good friend who for years would come see us when we would play in Portland. In Ashland we played with a band called Society Threat. All 40 punks from the town showed up and then we all went to someone's house for an after gig party. That was the first time of what became a customary let's-play-get-drunk-and-take-hallucinogenics trip to Ashland. That was the last show of that tour. We had no gig, but stopped anyway in San Francisco on the way back to LA. A cop hassled us for taking up a parking spot and just hanging out on the sidewalk. Our roadie at the time explained that it was our first time in 'Frisco'. The cop said first of all, it's not 'Frisco', it's 'San Francisco', and we don't want to get off to a bad start with a ticket so we'd better move along. Erik quitsErik moved away to Santa Barbara so he wasn't going on the next tour. We found a drummer named Scott to replace him. Before we left LA we wanted to fill up the tank with gas, so we all reached into our pockets. Scott was leaving LA with only six dollars. What a dumbass.First U.S. Tour 1985Mike sold his car and bought a Dodge van for us to tour in. I can't recall how many times that van broke down. We eventually replaced everything under the hood. It was also kind of a cop magnet. We got hassled by cops everywhere we went. Maybe it was the huge NOFX spray painted graffiti style on the side. Lesson learned.There weren't that many places we could play. If we had a gig at a recreation center in Lincoln and nothing for days until Madison, we would play a basement party at some very nice or naïve person's house the next night, and then sleep on their floor for a week. We would play in front of hardly any people for whatever gas money, beer money or no money we could get. Mike booked us one entire summer tour playing only house parties. You buy the keg, charge two bucks for a cup, and give us the $60 you collected.Scott joinsWe needed another drummer 'cuz Scott moved to San Diego, so we found another guy named Scott to play drums. Dave joinsWe also tried out and took on a singer. His name was Dave Allen.Winter 1985We toured the southwestern U.S. with the band Entropy, and played a couple of shows with Scared Straight and the Grim. We were a four piece again, and, with our roadies and girlfriends in tow were 12 people in that Dodge van. One night we all slept in the van and the condensation built up and froze under the ceiling. In the morning when the sun came up it melted the ice and made rain on us inside the van. We played a show on New Year's eve in Dallas and during our set I put down my guitar to fight with a skinhead. That was the end of that show.
San FranciscoAfter that tour Mike moved to San Francisco to go to school. Dave, who had been our singer for less than a few months, died in a car accident. Scott, the drummer, quit. Erik was living in Santa Barbara and we talked him into rejoining NOFX. I moved to Santa Barbara to go to city college. We were back to a 3-piece again, but we wanted to add second guitar player.Dave joins Dave Casillas, formerly of Rat Pack and some other Oxnard area bands, joined us. With him we toured the U.S. twice, and went to Europe for our first time. He played on our Liberal Animation LP, the P.M.R.C. can suck on this EP and the first version of S & M Airlines which was on a split 7"with Drowning Roses. First Europe tourWe were on the East Coast during a U.S. tour when Mike called a German booking agent we had met at Gilman St. a few months before. He had booked a tour for the Adolescents and they had just cancelled at the last minute. There was a German band called Drowning Roses to play and share a van and gear with, but he still wanted an American band. We weren't anywhere near as popular as the Adolescents but he booked us anyway. Just before we left the U.S., Dave had his accident. They had been drinking all day with our friends from the band Subculture. There was a man made lake at Bo's house that had been formed by cutting an area of the forest down to stumps and filling it in with water. They were doing long dives off of a short pier.
They said to dive to the right, because of a huge stump that lay just under the water's level to the left. I remember that he always had a little trouble with his right and his left. The swelling eventually went down after six weeks in Europe. I think that he had the stitches removed somewhere in Germany.Dave quitsIt became quite apparent that Dave was really more of a fun guy to watch get drunk and fall down at a party than a guitar player who could remember how to play NOFX songs. After Europe Mike, Erik and I talked about what to do. Mike called him up to talk to him, and that's when Dave quit. Steve joinsBack in the day, there was this band called "New Improved God". Their bass player, Skip, and I had been friends for years. Skip introduced me to this guy Steve at the old downtown Scream. I told him NOFX needed a new guitar player and how Fat Mike would hate his long hair. So about a week later Steve came out to rehearsal. We ran though a couple of songs that were written for the "S & M Airlines" album. Fat Mike hated his long hair and Steve was in the band. "S & M" was recorded a month later almost to the day. Even before the album was out, we embarked on a three month tour of the States and Canada. We were back in town a few months, and then went to Europe for a month and a half. We came back to the states to rehearse (rehearse?), and then record "Ribbed". We were actually drawing a blank on the whole album cover/ name thing, when Steve said "*@!* it! Let's just have a picture of a huge condom on the cover!" What a f*king genius. We headed back out on tour, first the US and then back over to Europe, where we played with real bands like The Leaving Trains, Bad Religion, and Mudhoney.Steve quitsSteve and I were at a Burbank Bar-B-Que, when he announced to me that he was leaving the band. As usual we were drunk and stoned, so I thought, maybe me don't hear so good, but this was not the case. He said it was nothing personal, he just needed a break from the band. I found out later that one of the main reasons he left was because of drug abuse (not his) in the band and that he just couldn't take it anymore. El Hefe joinsNow we needed a guitar player again! What the hell was wrong with us? We were going to practice in San Francisco and try out guitar players. My friend Rob had a guitar, so I asked him for a ride to SF. Erik had a friend named Aaron who played guitar in a band called Crystal Sphere with a drunk named Mark Curry.
This other friend of ours, Kevin, from Las Vegas, wanted to try out too. He showed up in S.F. with a NOFX tattoo. By all rights, he should have got the job, but we tried out the other guys anyway. Aaron was a really good guitar player. He played the trumpet too. Definitely too good for us. He was also f*king funny. The only problem was that we already had two Erix in the band, adding an Aaron would be just too confusing. So we gave Rob a try. He was good, but Aaron was the best. We just needed to give him a new name. Since he was the most qualified musician
